March 12. “—Representatives of fifteen bus Operators' associations will meet in Washington, March 19, to perfect, through the American Automobile Association, the permanent national organization of the gigantic bus in.elustry of the country. The body, already functioning in preliminary way, will be known as the bus division of the A. A. A. and is expected to merge the bus men of the country into a vast whole through which their difficulties will be Ironed out by close cooperation. Relegates tothe meeting March 19. at the. same time will he on hand to attend Senate committee hearings (set for March 22 and 23 on the Cummins Bill, which provides for regulation of bus lines in interstate commerce. The Cummins Bill, introduced at the instance of the National Association of Railroad and Utilities Commissioners, is pending before the Senate committee on interstate commerce, Desire Changes in Bill Prior to appearing before the committee, the bus operators will determine on changes which they desire in the bill to protect their industry. Establishment of a permane- , Rational organization for the bus operators Is assured, as bus associations in fifteen states now have affiliated with the bus division of the A. A. A. The representatives of the bus operators will elect permanent officers, establish permanent dues and perfect other arrangements. States To Tie Represented ,% States represented at the meeting will include Oregon, Washington, California, Michigan, Illinois, West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, Pennsylvania. Massachuetts, Arizona, Ohio, North and South Carolina and On March 21, after completing its organization work, the legislative committee of the bus division will confer with legislative committees of the National Association of Railroad and Utilities Commissioners, the American Railway Association and the American Electric Railway Association, In an effort to arrive at an accord on the Cummins Bill. The announcement of the March 19 organization meeting of the Bus Division said: , Necessity Shown “There Is little need to stress the importance of State associations taking part in perfecting a national body. Its necessity Is illustrated in the need for combined action on the Cummins bill, if nothing else. "It is pretty generally appreciated that if the industry is to advance iilang sound, constructive lines without restrictive hindrance, it must follow the lead ofth,e older transportation utilities, and provide a national medium to further Its interests. Everyone Is fa m i llar_ with advantages which have accrued to the steam and electric railways through efforts of their national organizations, and similar benefits have made themselves apparent quickly In every other line of business where a national directing force has been established. “There is greater reason, even. Why this should hold true of the bus industry, for, day In and day out, there is no other class of business subjected to greater difficulties than this infant of the transportation group. "If It can throw the power of a national organization into the hearings on the Cummins bill, the chances for most necessary changes in the measure should be greatly enhanced.” FIRST PEPPER THRIVING OCEANSIDE, Cal.—The first pepper tree to take root in the soil of California still thrives within the walled grounds of Mission San Luis Rey, near here. HOUSELEADERS MAPOUT PLAN TO RUSH SHOALS Would Send Bill to Conference Without Action on Floor. Times Washinaton Bi trenu. 1322 Xew York Avenue. WASHINGTON, March 12. —House independents will get little chance to debate proposed amendments to the Muscle Shoals disposal resolution under plans considered by House leaders today. The resolution probably will be thrown into conference without any direct consideration of the amendments on the floor. Chairman Snell of the Rules Committee admitted. This is contrary to usual procedure. A king the amendments in confere rather than on the floor will give ..ie Administration leaders two advantages: They will be able to jam the meastrfe through the House with. less delay and will also face less danger of a mutiny by Democratic Representatives from Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina, Georgia and Louisiana. FIREMEN IN CLOSE CALL Walls Collapse in SIOO,OOO Blaze at Chicago. lilt United Press CHICAGO, March 12.— Several firemen escaped death under the tumbling walls of the Arnstein Paint Company’s plant early today, when fire gutted the five-story building at a loss estimated at SIOO,OOO. sentatlves supported the original resolution almost unanimously, but there Is indication that the fight of southern Senators to amend the measure has caused some changes in viewpoint. The strained position of Representative Garrett, Tennessee, Democratic floor leader, is typical. Garrett joined with the Coolidge shock troops in jamming the original resolution through the House. He proclaimed it to be a wonderful measure. His colleagues. Senators Me- | Kellar and Tyson of Tennessee, took a different attitude. McKellar attacked the resolution vehemently. Tyson voted to amend it so as to secure allocation of some surplus power from the big Government power plant to Tennessee consumers and manufacturers. If Garrett makes the wrong move now, he may find himself in deep water hack home. And other southern representatives are very much in the same boat.
