COOLIDGE ASKS DAVIS TO STAY AT LABOR POST I Does Not Want Him to Quit to Seek Pennsylvania Governorship. Bu United Press WASHINGTON, March 11.—A strange series of circumstances is involving President Coolidge, a member of his cabinet, the “Mellon” political power, a Senator, and the wet and dry fight in the ominous Pennsylvania primaries. Secretary of Labor James J. Davis has asked Air. Coolidge to permit him to run for Governor to help the “Mellon” ticket headed by Senator George Wharton Pepper, but the United Press was informed today that Mr. Coolidge desires Davis to stay in the cabinet if possible. The chief executive has no pne in contemplation who would fill the labor post as he desires it filled. Since John L. Lewis, president of the Mine .Workers, became involved in the long coal strike just closed, his availability has not been considered, Mr. Coolidge’s friends think. Meantime, Davis has not ygt made up his mind whether he should run, despite the President’s mild objections. A development which may make up his mind for him is the expected fca njiouncement of the candidacy of " Representative Vare, Republican, Pennsylvania, to run against Pepper in the primaries. Vare's platform will be soaking wet and his fight will offer the first test of sentiment following recent anti-prohibition polls.
