DRYS DECLARE ONLY WETS ARE VOTING IN POLL i Crusaders Say True Sentiment Is Not Being Recorded by Vote. Bu United Press CHICAGO, March 11.—Prohibition is here to stay, and the polls being ■taken thruoghout the ■ country- by leading newspapers—polls showing a majority of approximately 10 to 1 in favor of dry law modification —do not represent the sentiment of the American public, In the opinion of Arthur Burrage Harwell, one of the foremost prohibition crusaders of the Middle West. “The newspapers are making an honest effort to get the public sentiment,” Harwell said. "But the fact remains that most of the'answers are coming from enthusiastic w-ets who fall to recognize that prohibition is here to stay.” Farwell declared that had a similar poll been taken w r hile the country still had the saloons, the drys would have won a commanding victory. | The wets at that time would have scoffed at the idea the drys could j put through a prohibition measure. 1 The wets wouldn't have voted then, j just as the drys are failing to vote | now, he said. DRY LEADERS WARN , Tell Followers (o Avoid Polls—Claim They Are One-Sided. Bu United Pres* , „ WASHINGTON, March 11.—Dry leaders sent word today to their followers to avoid newspaper polls on prohibition. Claiming that the polls are onesided open to “repeaters” and not at all indicative of real sentiment In the land, the leaders warned that the dry questions has been settled in “orderly fashion” and the polls are. superfluous. Wayne B. Wheeler, executive counsel of the Anti-Saloon League, told the United Press: • “Dry do not participate in straw votes because they are not official. They do not count. That’s why the w r ets always win* them.” His announcement followed a more elaborate overnight statement of the League’s executive committee which declared, “friends of prohibition should not and do not as a rule, participate in these unofficial polls which make possession of a coupon cut from some newspaper the sole qualification of voting.” MODIFICATION NOT ENOUGH j lIU United Press AUGUSTA, Ga., March 11.—The j November elections will show the i w r orld that America stands heartily j against prohibition, Dr. Nicholas j Murray Butler, president j bia University, told the United I Press here today. “The polls which newspapers are ! now- conducting do not reach enough | of the American people,” he said, j “The November elections, however, j will give them tjieir chance to really , express themselves. "Modification of the law-s is not j enough. I am for repealing them completely. I expect to see the Vol- ; stead law repealed within the next I five years and I shall continue to , fight against the law with that in j view. “Prohibition most emphatically has not helped the American people.”
