Y.W.G.A. BRANCH ON SOUTH SIDE TO OPEN SOON Home at Alabama, McCarty Sts. Will Be Made Community Center. Young Wofhen’s Christian Association will soon open a south side branch to women and girls. Negotiations for the old Schmidt home on the north east corner of Alabama and McCarty Sts., which will be remodeld into a dormitory, have been made through J. IC Lilly. The site was selected because of the opportunities of making it a community center. Between fifty and sixty girls and women can be housed in the new building. A membership exceeding 2,000 is expected. Mrs. Acfcman, Chairman. Mrs. C. W. Ackman, 1502 S. Alabama St., is chairman of management of the new branch, others on the committee are Mrs. Fred Hoke, vice chairman, and Miss Elizabeth McKenzie, executive secretary. Plans for a cafeteria and recreation rooms are going forward. The large building in the rear will be remodeled to accommodate an adequate gymnasium, where basket-ball, and skating parties may be held. The yard will be made into tennis courts. All equipment will be provided. Special Courses Membership for four years will cost ?1. A small tuition charge will be made for special courses in gymnasium and other features. The charter is open during March. Sr. Mark’s English Lutheran Church, at Prospect and Linden Sts., has promised to provide a room for two girls. Bids for the remodeling are in and work will start soon. A representative from each church on the south side will be a member of the council. South side women are standing behind the movement. Committee heads are: Mrs. Robert McKay, membership; Mrs. Fred A. Naegele, house chairman; Miss Lora Mackenhorst, health and education; Mrs. H. W. Stuckmayer, Girl Reserves; Mrs. Pauline, McKay, industrial chairman; Mrs. N. P. Carms, cafeteria; Miss Viola Baxter and Mrs. Mrs. Carl Kryter, special gifts chairmen, and Mrs. A. Jack Tilson of University Heights, publicity chairman. MEDALS FOR CHILDREN Oratorical Contest Saturday Night at Valley Mills. Parent-Teacher Club of Valley Mills will conduct a three-medal oratorical contest for school children at Valley Mills hall Saturday night. Meridian W. C. T. U. will present the medals.
