TEXTILE PEACE HOPES DIMMED Mill Owners Refuse to Enter Negotiations. Bu United Press PASSAIC, N. J., March S.—Prospects of immediate mediation of the textile strike were dimmed today by the refusal of mill owners to enter into negotiations with Albert Weisbord, chairman of the united front committee on the ground that he represents “communistic agitators.’’ Charles F. 11. Johnson, speaking for the Botany Worsted Mills, of which he is a vice president, said he and other employers were willing to discuss terms of settlement with the workers, but not with “paid outsiders who have come here to stir up trouble.” Johnson's statement followed approval by the strikers of an offer of mediation made by Rabbi Stephen Wise of New York. Rabbi Wise, Paul U. Kellogg, editor of the Survey; the Rev. John Howard Melish and Dr. John Lovejoy Elliott would compose the board of mediators. These four discs were thrown on Mary’s desk. “Here,” said her brother Bab, “this will give you a little practice for your next spelling contest. Just arrange these letters until you form a four-letter English word. Then rearrange them into as many other four letter. English words as possible.” "How many words can you make, Bob?” asked Mary- “Oh! I can make four,” boasted Bob. Mary laughed, “I know, l will beat you.” she said. And she did. She made seven words. What are they? Last puzzle answer: The vowel "E” was left out of the note written by the little Co-ed. Adding “E” to “THYSCRTDTHSVN SWTNDDSSRTSBTWNTHSHDVS” you get “They secreted the seven sweetened desserts between the shelves.” The letter left out was easy to discover because it was obviously a vowel. Since there are only five common vowels and "E” is the most frequently used, the note should have been read in five minutes. 37 NURSES PROMOTED Seven Local Women in Indiana University March Glass. Seven Indianapolis women are included in the list of thirty-seven probationers promoted to be pulpit nurses in the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, Mrs. Ethel P. Clarke, R. N., director, has announced. They are: Jeanetta B. Nunamaker, Edna H. Williams, Susan Delbrook, Elizabeth F. Gest, Myrtle Parker, Helen Mae Rieger and Helen B. Shugert. Miss Thelma Mattox was the Indianapolis representative in the probationary class of twenty-seven which began March 1. Promotions and admissions are in March and September. Probationers have a trial period of six months before being admitted to the rank of pupil nurse, and spend two and a half years additional in training at the Riley Hospital, the Robert W. Long Hospital and the State Medical School before receiving the degree of graduate nurse from Indiana University. Seventy-five applications have already been received for admission to the t September probationary class, although on account of limited housing facilites the class probably will be limited to thirty. The present total enrollment is 134. ROADS LAUNCH NEW RATE PLEA Western Railways Say Increase Is Necessary. Bv United Press CHICAGO, March B—Western railroads today started a campaign to obtain higher freight rates, asserting the boost is necessary “to pay a fair return on investments.” A brief to be filed with Interstate Commerce Commission was made public today. It demands immediate action, declaring that a five-year test has demonstrated the necessity of increased rates and pointing out that eastern and southern roads have been increasing their freight charges steadily while western roads have held their rates down. Agriculture has been given preferred treatment during the period of depression, the brief sets forth, and insists that livestock raisers and agriculturists of the Middle West should now contribute their share in the rate increases.
