PRISONS HANG OUT S. R. 0. SIGN No Place to Send U. S. Prisoners Soon. Bv United Press _ _ , WASHINGTON, March 5. —Criminal convictions under Federal statutes have increased 350 per cent in the last twelve years, causing an overcrowding of Federal penitentiaries far beyond their normal capacity. Penitentiaries at Atlanta, McNeil Island and Ijeavenworth house about 7,000 Federal prisoners at present, with 2,000 other Government convicts housed in State penal Institutions, Justice Department officials said. Federal courts, after a recess, are now returning hundreds of convictions a week and It is expected the Federal prison population will Increase to more than 8,000 before July 1. Should the number Increase above 8.000 the Government will have no place to house Its prisoners. L. C. White, superintendent of prisons, .said. "Dosplte tho fact that the penetentiaries have 1.000 less inmates than six months ago, they are overcrowded,” White said. “At present 200 men are forced to sleep In the basement of one of the cell houses at and it is necessary to place two inmates In cells intended for one.” State officials caring for Federal prisoners have complained to Attorney Gt>neral Sargent against the practice and the government must soon provide other accommodations for the convicts distributed In State jails. Prohibition, officials admitted, is partially responsible for the overcrowded conditions. Seventeen per cent of all Federal convicts have been convicted of violating the Volstead Act.
