CHICAGO MAYOR DEFENDS CITY Denies Charge Politics and Vice Are Friendly. Bu United Press CHICAGO, March 4—Mayor William E. Dever today announced a campaign to acquit Chicago of the charge that politics and crime there are friendly. “Chicago is not immoral,” Mayor Dever asserted, “and I will show by figures that it has less crime per capita than any other large city in tthe world.” Recent charges by Chicago's better government associations before a senatorial committee in Washington charges that the city is overrun by criminals and crooked-grafting politicians who protect crime, aroused the mayor’s Ire. Dever suggested that he might go to Washington and demand a hearing before the same senatorial committee to “tell the truth about crime conditions in Chicago.” MARKETGETS NEW PRODUCTS Honey Dew Melons, Asparagus Make Appearance. Four new commodities appeared at city market today. South American honey dew melons at 75“ and 85 cents each were on many stands. Asparagus sold from 30 cents to $1.50 a bunch, according to size. English hothouse grapes, at $1 a pound, re appeared, and rutabagas, at 5 cents a pound, were plentiful. Other prices included: Peas, 30 cents a pound; rhubarb, 15 cents a bunch; Idaho potatoes, three pounds for 25 cents; new potatoes, two pounds for 15 cents; sweet potatoes, 10 cents a pound; pineapples, 35 to 50 cents each; strawberries, 70 cents a box; tomatoes, 30 cents a pound, and new cabbage, 10 cents a pound. Salmon sold at 35 cents a pound; mullets, 15 cents a pound; halibut, 35 cents a •pod'nd; carp, 15 cents a pound; eggs, 35 and 40 cents a dozen; chickens, 42 to 50 cents a pound; cucumbers, 25 and 35 cents each: green beans, 60 cents a pound; French endive, 60 cents a pound; curly endive, 10 and 15 cents a pound; head lettuce, 10 and 20 cents a head; leaf lettuce, 20 cents a pound; oranges, 40 to 60 cents a dozen, and lemons, 20 to 40 cents a dozen. GET AUXILIARY TROPHY Utah Legion Department Wins Membership Contest. Utah department of the American Legion Auxiliary is the 1926 winner of the Lillian M. Towne national membership content participated in by auxiliary State departments, it was announced here today by Mrs. Lupy Boyd, national secretry. Utah also won in 1925. The Towne trophy, presented by past national membership chairman, Mrs. Lillian M. Towne of Waterville, Maine, is awarded to the auxiliary department attaining the highest perct ntage of its preceding year’s membership by March 1. Utah, with a percentage of 115, led all departments. Indiana department finished among the leaders In fifteenth place, with 56.5 per cent. BABY IS FOUND DEAD Coroner Paul F. Robinson today investigated the death of Clara De Ree, three-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alva De Ree, 1923 S. Pershing St., who died Wednesday night. Motorpolicemen Tague and Ferguson said the baby probably died either from choking or sufocation. De Ree found the baby dead in bed.
