Michigan put the skids under Illinois. Our record in “picking” for the night was .667. We doped Indiana, Purdue and Illinois to win. The Illini veterans slip at unexpected moments. Illinois needed that Wolverine contest badly. Coach Ruby’s club has lost three games now and have tough contests ahead with Indiana and Purdue. The Hoosier schools have a chance at a tie for the Big Ten title. Purdue is in second place now and can go into first place by defeating Illinois on next Monday. I. U. and Purdue have fine chances to down the Illini. If they do, it will push the Urbana team from the lead. Five teams at present have lost four games. Michigan this week won two games while • Wisconsin dropped two. Four teams are tied for third place. Some race! Paul Hinkle, assistant coach at Butler, under Athletic Director Page, who resigned Wednesday will be put in charge of athletics temporarily, according to information obtained today. Hinkle coached the baseball team last spring. * * * EHE schedules for the high school sectional tourneys show that 719 teams will compete this year. This is fortyfive more teams than toed the mark in 1925, when 674 were seen in action. In 1924 there were 665 clubs and in 1923 there were 596. When is this thing going to stop? In the first tournament in 1911 there were thirteen schools represented. As there are ten boys eligible on each team (only eight can play, however) the total number of athletes competing reaches the amazing total of 7,190. * * * mN the sectional tournaments 128 officials will be used at the sixty-four P centers, two at each meet. Each official receives SSO which means an out-lay of $6,400. Twen-ty-four officials will work in the eight regionals, three to each center. They also get SSO each. The total paid to the regional referees comes to $1,200 Four officials will be on hand for the State finals. They will receive $75 each making a total of S3OO. The grand total amounts to $7,900. • • * SHAT Vincennes 22 to 21 victory over Martinsville just before the State tournaments should give nigh school fans something to think about. It seems to show that Coaches Adams and Curtis are thinking about defense. Not long ago a well-known cqach said that if some team would specialize on defense it would have a good chance to win the State title. Maybe they are trying It out. THREE GAMES ON SUNDAY Three basket games will be given to the fans Sunday afternoon at the Turner gym. The main attraction ■will be between the Turners and the fast Whiteland five. This game will start at 3:30. Another feature of the afternoon will be between two girls' teams, the Brightwood Demons and the East Side Comets which starts at 2:45. a At 2 p. m. the Turners Blues will ■ackle the Riverside Meteors. NEW PITCHER Bush's Indians Sign Carl Ray, Southpaw. Manager Ownie Bush picked up another pitcher today for a tryout. The new hurler is Carl Ray, a southpaw, and he is said to be a likely prospect. Ray was recommended by Tom Whelan, former Tribe utility player. The twlrler played In a twilight league in New England last summer, where Whelan performed. The southpaw was with the Philadelphia Athletics a few season ago. According to Whelan, Pitcher Ray is sturdy and a hard worker. Bush figures Whelan is wise enough in baseball to know talent when he sees It and therefore it may be possible that Ray will make good in the Americai: Association. HE’S IN THE NAVY NOW Harry (Kid) Rozelle, pugilist, who has appeared at Tomlinson Hall and Ft. Harrison frequently, is back in the Navy and is stationed at Great Lakes, The kid fought the welter champ of the Lakes training station recently and knocked out his opponent In the fifth round, so says Harry. He writes: "They think I am a real fighter up here, but they don't know me, do they?” OHO HESS IS DEAD Bv United Press t DAYTON, Ohio, Feb. 27.—0tt0 Hess, former famous southpaw pitcher of the Boston Braves and Cleveland Indians, died at Tucson, Ariz., Friday', relatives here learned today. Ono week from tonight sixty-four teams will have been culled from the 719 starters as the best in the districts they represent. Fight Regionals Then will come another week of hurriefl preparation, and these sixtyfour teams will invade eight cities where regional tournaments will be played The schedules for these regional meets already have been drawn, and all that remains is the selection of the district champions. After the hurry and rush and the reigonals are over there will be only sixteen undefeated teams left in the State —the sixteen best—and from this select crowd a champion will be selected in the meet at Indianapolis March 19 and 20. From now on until the big show is over the dopesters of Indiana will buy pencils and paper, and delve into figures and “form charts” ■which, in this State of high-powered basketball competition, mean little. Manual in Opener The Indianapolis sectional at the fairground is one of the largest in the State with sixteen entries. Manual and Castleton will open the meet at 9 a. m., next Friday morning. Shorti’idge and Southport clash in the 10 a. m. contest. Technical does not play r until 7:30 p. rn. Friday, meeting Broad Ripple. If Manual and Shortridge win their first games they will meet in the first game Saturday morning at 8:30. Technical seems to have the easiest draw of the local schools and probably will find fairly easy sailing to the final sectional battle.

Larry Sobjeck F*’ “■ [STIC fans of Indianapolis are promised furious milling at Tomlinson Hall next Wednesday, when Larry Sobjeck, Milwaukee heavyweight, tangles with George Mulholland, Indianapolis’ new boxing sensation. Sobjeck has had much professional experience and “Mully” will have to battle hard to escape defeat. It will be George s fifth pro fight. Louie Lavelle and Ivewpie Trimble will mix In the semi-wind-up and there will be four prelim bouts. I. U., Purdue Win as Illinois Loses Indiana University and Purdue stayed in the running for Big Ten basketball honors Friday night by victories over Minnesota and Wisconsin respectively as Illinois was losing to Michigan. The scores: Indiana, 41; Minnesota, 23. Purdue, 32; Wisconsin, 31. Michigan, 33; Illinois, 24, The Boilermakers took a hectic affair from the Badgers at Lafayette. After leading in the first half, 19 to 10, Purdue faltered and the visitors went into the lead and attempted to stall out the contest. Purdue fought desperately and got a onepoint advantage just befote the gun. Captain Spradling did not start for Purdue because of a cold, but was sent in for Wheeler in the first half and made four field goals and three foul goals to lead the scoring. Behr was high point man for Wisconsin. I. U. ran wild at Minnesota with Beckner and Krueger each getting six “buckets.” The Hoosiers played one of their best games which means they were much too good for the Gophers. Illinois lost its third game of the season and suffered its first, reverse on the home floor when Michigan attack proved too much for the Big Ten leaders. Harrigan led the Wolverine offensive, while Doolen, a substitute, was high point man for the losers. Michigan led at the half, 21 to 5.
