SOFT COAL MEN OPEN FIGHT TO HOLD MARKETS Renew Efforts to Obtain Adjustments in Lake Cargo Rates. Times Traahfnatem Bureau. Hit, New York Avenue. WASHINGTON, Feb. 26.—The anthracite strike settled and the temporary prosperity enjoyed by Ohio and western Pennsylvania bituminous mines about to disappear, the operators of these two States are renewing their fight with the Interstate Commerce Commission to obtain an adjustment In lake cargo ates. Because of the decisions commission’s the bulk of the coal shipped through Toledo, Cleveland, Sandusky and other lake for the Northwest and Canada Is coming from West Virginia and Kentucky mines, a, result of cheaper freignt rates. This coal, formerly shipped from western Pennsylvania and southern Ohio mines, now passes through these same districts from points a hundred miles and more away at cheaper rates. The result is southern Ohio and western Pennsylvania mines steadily are losing ground. Before Congress The operators from both States have laid their troubles before their respective congressional delegations in an effort to bring pressure on the commission. In the meantime a petition is pending before the commission urging the lake cargo rates be reopened. The commission's decision was not unanimous and former Chairman RlcChord in a minority opinion held “the majority report fails to accord to the complaining Ohio and Pittsburgh groups rates to which they ire justly entitled." Pennsylvania Ignored The lake caigo case is pointed to by Senator Reed of Pennnsylvania and others as a concrete reason why there should be sectional membership on the commission. During the forty-year history of the commission Pennsylvania has never had a member of the commission, Reed alleges. Senator Peppepr in a statement
