Tl*> Eucalyptus tree and its tiny seeds and flowers.
SHE tallest tree In the world according to some authorities 1h the Eucalyptus amaßdalina, a member of this groat and valuable group of gum trees, native to Australia; and the specimen which holds the record was found prostrate In the colony of Victoria and measured 470 feet in length. Tho tall white stems of these trees, smooth as marble columns, frequently rise 00 or 70 feet from the ground without a branch. From such giants down to the small eucalpytus bushes so common In (.*allfornla, the members of this group, which embraces more than IDO species, are among the most beautiful, interesting and useful trees known to use. The wood is very tough and durable and Is much used for ship and wharf-building because It resists decay in the water. It takes a high polish and so la valuable for Interior finishing. Certain eucalyptus trees yield a gummy sap, from which tannin Is obtained. Tho inner bark of some species consist of very tough long fiber, used for ropemaking, paper and thatch. The leaves which in many species turn edgewise to the sun. furnish the eucalyptus oil (eucalyptol) used In medicine for its germ-killing and stimulating properties. The nanio eucalyptol comes from two Greek words meaning “well covered,” referring to tho abundant foliage. Because this enormous leaf area enables them to evaporate Into the atmosphere the vast, quantities of water absorbed by their roots, eucalyptus trees are often planted In swamps, which they help to drain. It is this faculty'of drying up mosquito marshes, rather than their pungent odor, which hns won for them their- reputation as safeguards against malnrial'-mosquitoes. Tho eucalyptus genus lielongs to the family of myrtles. Among the most common species of the eucalyptus are the blue gum, valuable for Its timber, the hnanna gum, valued for the nectur of its white blossoms, of which bees uro very fond; the jarrah tree, most used for wharfs and docks, and the swamp mahogany, the best reclaimer* of swampy lands. In tho warmer parts of the United States, especially in
