STOCK MARKET HOLIDAY CLOSE IS IRREGULAR Industrials Are Unable to Overtake American Can Lead. \ Average Stock Prices rtveragre price of twenty industrial stocks fur Saturday was 180.02. off .17 Average price of twenty rails for Saturday was 111.20, up .00. Bit Timm Special NEW YORK, Feb. 20.—Trading was substantially reduced In the week-end session by the slim attendance on the floor and In commission houses, owing to the opportunity afforded for a three-day holiday by Monday’s suspension of stock exchange activities. But professional attempts to capitalize this situation by marking prices down were checked by indications of powerful support which had their most striking manifestation in a further sharp uprush In American Can, whose sponsorship lies with Wall street’s most influential banking interests. Industrials were unable to make headway against American Can’s leadership although they were successful in forcing further liquidation in Baldwin and American Locomotive. However, these spots of heaviness were offset by special strength in various issues including Allied Chemical, United Cigar Stores, Foundation Company and Columbian Carbon. The market closed irregular. Closing prices included: Local Bank Clearings Indianapolis bank rjrarinzs for today amomitp.l to $3,110,000. Debits totaled $0,245,000. CHICAGO WHEAT PRICES ADVANCE Other Cereals Gain and Pit Tone Is Bullish. Du Tim- Special CHICAGO, Feb. 20.—Substantial advances were scored in wheat futures on the Chicago Board of Trade today. The strength spread to small grains. Wheat responded easily to the distinctly bullish undertone growing out of spirited short covering and commission house buying. Failure to connect the advance with news developments Indicated that purchases were made in anticipation of the Monday holiday. On the advance, the market displayed the strongest tone for some time. Corn was up fractionally with wheat. There was less disposition to support the market. Oats were moderately higher with the general market. Provisions sagged late In cash house selling.
