Bn United Press \ LONDON, Feb. 3 9.—The shadow of Oscar Wilde crept into Bow St. roolice court here when Mrs. Mabel JWodehouse Pearse, widow of an American Red Cross war victim and a picturesque figure of London streets, was sentenced to six months In prison for theft of bank notes, worth $1,200. This ignomihy was the latest phase of a remarkable career in which have figured riches, vivid romance, adventure, poverty and drabbiness. For some years she lias been a familiar figure about London, distinguished by her flowing, unkempt garments and the pink and green parrot that was always seen perched on her shoulder. Beautiful Girl As Mabel Cosgrove, a beautiful Irish girl, Mrs. Pearse spent her early life in the home of Sir William and Lady Wilde where she made the acquaintance of Oscar Wilde and his- brother Willie. She became engaged to Willie, hut the affair was broken off. The girl married a Burmese Prince, Chan Toon, who was educated at Cambridge. Luring her married life in Burma she wrote several novels and when her husband died she came into wealth. She traveled extensively, met the ex-I-Caiser and moved in high society. In Mexico, where she was a frequent visitor at the house of the German ambassador, an incident occurred that caused her to he imprisoned for three months. The British consul was supposed to have made an indiscreet remark about the ambassador, and Princess Chan Toon wrote about it in an article entitled “The Babbling Brook.” Actions for libel resulted and she was arrested.
She always said that at the time the bully of the prison, who did the flogging of prisoners and exorted money from them, was Pancho Villa. Weds American Eventually she returned to England and became the wife of Wodehouse Pearse, a man of high social standing. During the war he joined the American Red Cross and was killed by a shell while attending wounded. For a time she resided in Ireland, but her home was burned down during the civil war there. Mrs. Pearse’s parrot, known as “Co-Co,” speaks in both French and English. The bird is being taken care of while she Is in prison.
