MARYLAND TO RENEW FIGHT TO TRY AGENTS $ Encouraged by U. S. Supreme Court Ruling Favoring State Tribunal. Times Washington Bureau, 1322 New York Avenue. WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—The State of Maryland -will make a second attempt to have Federal prohibition agents tried for offenses in State courts. The State recently won a partial victory when the X U. S. Supreme Court held that four agents accused of the murder of Lawrence Wenger, Maryland farmer, may be tried in the Srato courts unless they sho%v more fully that they were operating in line of duty when Wenger was killed. - Following a practice customary over the country, the four agents had been taken from the State jurisdiction and were to be tried in the Federal Court. The Supreme Court held unreservedly that the agents could be tried in the State courts on charges of perjury and conspiracy to obstruct justice, companion charges to that of murder. The State, however, will also appeal the case of Prohibition Agent J. M. Furbershaw, accused of murder for killing John Bungori, suspected bootleggegr, when the latter Pn after arrrest at Havre De Grace, and., last summer. Furbershaw also has been taken from the State authorities, and is awaiting trial before Federal Judge Soper at Baltimore. This case, according to Attorney General Robinson of Maryland may clear up the general principle as to whether prohibition agents unreservedly enjoy the status of Federal revenue agents and are entitled to transfer to Federal courts for trial. INCREASE MADE IN HIGHWAY ACCIDENTS Report of State Official Shows There Were 284 More Mishaps on Roads in 1925 Than in Preceding Year.

Despite repeated pleas for careful driving, and the expenditure of thousands of dollars annually to insure safety on the public highways, 284 more road accidents were recorded during the 1925 fiscal year, that the one preceding, according to a report by A. H. Hinkle, State highway maintenance superintendent. During the latter year, 103 deaths occurred on State roads, as against only fifty in 1924. Reports show a total of 654 State highway accidents in 1925, compared with 370 in 1924, resulting in injuries to 529 persons the latter year against 255 in 1924. Chief cause for the alarming increase in casualties, Hinkle declared, is fast and reckless driving. This factor was responsible directly for half the 1925 accidents and proved the cause of 203 collisions. Although

the increase in the number of machines has been notable, that fact is negligible in tracing the cause of accidents, Hinkle says. Grade crossings come in for their share of the toll, claiming honors for thirty-seven of the 103 deaths. Twenty-one of the crossing fatalities were on steam roads and sixteen on tractions. In addition, nineteen persons were injured at crossings. Chief contributing causes for the accidents listed were intoxication, glaring headlights, narrow roadways and bridges and collisions with telephone and telegraph poles too near the traveled roadway.
