‘REAL WAGES’IN U. S. TUMBLE, SURVEY SHOWS American Workers Highest Paid, but Food Prices Are Higher. Times Washington Bureau. 1322 New York Avenue. WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—American workers are the highest-paid in the world, hut they must pay the highest prices for food. “Real wages,’’ meaning the value of wages when used to buy the necessities of life, have fallen steadily in America since 1924. They have increased in most other parts of the world. These are conclusions drawn by the International Labor Office of the League of Nations, which has compiled the prices of sixteen leading articles of food in about twenty representative cities of the world. In Philadelphia, selected as a rep resentative American city, these articles cost about $2.45. In Talinn, Esthonia, the cost is about $1.25. In London it is $1.88; Berlin, $1.79; Sydney, $1.93; Copenhagen, next highest to Philadelphia, $2.12; Paris, $1.43. Most of the other cities are low. Then the labor office, using the food-price wage balance in London in 1924, as 100, sought to translate the wages received toy workers into "real wages.’’ This resulted in a figure for Philadelphia of 176, which had dropped from 212 in 1924. Two other cities showed “real wages’’ above London: Ottawa, Canada, and

SHELL-RIM GLASSES NOT NOW IN STYLE Rimless, Octagon-Shaped Lenses, Mounted in White Gold, ‘Latest’ —‘Shopping Oxford’ a New One.

Not only in clothing, but in humble spectacles as well, is style to be found nowadays, according to the opticians, or eye-glass specialists. "When Milady steps out in her new spring costume she should not allow an old-fashioned pair of shellrimmed glasses to spoil her otherwise perfect costume. Rather, she should wear rimless, octagon-shaped lenses, mounted in white gold. It is the opinon of the optical authorities that nose glasses are appealing more to the public than before. Most of these are shown in the octagon, rimless models. “One thing about the rlmloss glasses, in any style, which adds to their popularity is that appropriateness to any occasion. They blend with any type of costume from formal to sports attire, while many persons’ appearances are utterly spoiled by a pair of dark-rimmed glasses. Then, too, they are different,” said one optician. An optical shop on N. Pennsylvania St. displays, in its window, a pair of old spectacles of the type which Benjamin Franklin might have worn. They are small, square lenses with gold rims. In direct Sydney, Australia, with 172 and 142, respectively. The others, all in the eastern hemisphere, showed “real wages” ranging from 89 for Amsterdam, 85 for Stockholm, and 79 for Copenhagen, down to 32 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Most men and women past fifty must give to the bowels some occasional help, else they suffer from constipation. One might as well refuse to aid weak eyes with glasses as to neglect a gentle aid to weak bowels. Is your present laxative, in whatever form, promoting natural bowel “regularity"—or must you purge and “physic” every day or two to avoid sick headache, dizziness, biliousness, colds, or sour, gajssy stomach? rims. Even in spectacles, styles recur again and again. The “shopping Oxford” is the latest thing out for the women. This type resembles a lorgnette, except that it has the characteristic perching quality of nose glasses. A slender, white gold chain gives a note of aristocracy to the costume, while the shopping oxford serves Its twofold purpose.
