WET FIGHT MAY OPEN EYES OF CHURCH PEOPLE Anti-Saloon League Quiz Will Bare Powerful Political Force. Times M'ashinntnn Bureau. 13tt New York Avenue. WASHINGTON, Feb. IS.—ls there Is a real Investigation of the AntiSaloon League, as proposed by Representative Britten of Illinois, it will open the eyes of the church members all over the Country. .Whatever-its influence on prohibition sentiment may be, it will throw some light on the experiment of mixing religion and politics. In its aggressive fight for the Eighteenth Amendment and the Volstead act, the Anti-Saloon has claimed to be the political agent of the evangelical Protestant churches. Governors and State judges, and in influencing the selection of Federal judges and other Federal officials, grew out of its influence with church-member voters. In the early years of its growth its funds came largely through contributions from churches and the Anti-Saloon League dues paid by hundreds of thousands of church members. Among the early big contributions were John D. Rockefeller and his son. Later on vast sums were contributed by big corporate employers of labor who financed the campaign for prohibition as an economic measure. Judge Gary of the Steel Corporation was a leader of the captains of industry who helped finance the campaign. The fight for prohibition was won. It appeared to be, a great victory for the churches, Now the Cost Now they are Counting the cost. There is some argument over whether the famous victory was. after all, either a moral or an economic victory. There is argument on whether the churches gained or lost religious influence by this adventure tn politics. The first light thrown on some tactics of some Anti-Saloon League leaders and lobbyists, was the exposure and conviction of William H. Anderson, then state superintendent of the League for New York, who went to Sing Sing. This exposure led to the withdrawal of support by the Rockefellers. There were others. Other revelations followed. It came out that a justice of the Supreme Court and an attorney general of Kansas were on the pay roll of the Anti-Saloon League. It developed that the League paid the campaign expenses of Congressman Volstead, author of the act bearing his name, and at the time chairman of the House Judiciary Committee before whom all prohibition legislation ,came. What further revelations may come through a Congressional investigation remain to develop, but it will be instructive to the churches to learn what was done In their name by a political organization which gained Its power and influence only with their backing.
