URGES OF •POLITICS IN BOARD MADE Johnson, Minority Board Member, Objects When More Employes Are Disr missed —Majority Faction Refers to Last Election. Charges that the majority faction Pf the Indianapolis school board is playing politics in dismissing and (appointing employes were made during the board meeting Tuesday night. When a list of twenty-four persons discharged in the last few days without notice and pay was presented ito the board for approval, Fred Bates Johnson, minority faction member, (strenuously objected. He questioned Jacob H. Hilkene, superintendent of buildings and grounds, as to what he knew about the dismissals and of the new persons. Hilkene said he knew nothing of them and that all such moves were carried out by Carl W. Eurton, hlB assistant. “Well, then I think that Eurton ought to be here to explain why he is dismissing some of these people,” Johnson said. “I think the minority members have the right to know why Eurton is firing them.” “He says for improvement of the service,” ‘Hilkene asserted. “Mixing in Politics” "It looks to me like this board is mixing up in politics too much, Johnson said. Charles W. Kern, majority faction member, replied that there Is no more political activity now than there was last fall or four years ago among board employes. Johnson, Charles R. Yoke, minoxity member, and Hilkene said they knew nothing of political funds being raised at the school shops and among employes. An order was Issued shortly before the last election prohibiting employes from making any political connections. "Maybe. If they had had a chance to fight their side of the battle they would be better off right now,” HUkene said. Johnson then asked about the dismissal of George Adarhs, a machinist.' “He had been in the service a long time and was a good man,’ Johnson said. "Now why was he fired on an hour’s notice and with no pay? He has an invalid wife and fitfe children. “That’s why I want Eurton brought here. I want to see the man who has the effrontery and cruelty to fire a man on an hour’s notice. It looks mighty bad.” President Replies “Yes, it does look bad with the pathos you put in it,’’ Board President Theodore Vonnegut said. “Then maybe you will be able to explain the situation,” Johnson said. Vonnegut said he had investigated it. Mrs. Lillian Sedwick asked Johnson if the board had always taken such a keen “interest In humanity.’’ "If It has, your hearts must have bled last fall when money was being raised among employes for political reasons,*’ Kern said. “Murderers, recognized thieves and bootleggers, were employed during your administration, Johnson.” “Not murderers, surely,” Johnson said. I wasn’t aware of It. "I wasn’t' either,” Hilkene added. A motion, presented hy Johnson, providing that Eurton appear and explain personnel changes In the future, was carried. The report on dismissals and appointments was approved by the majority factlop vote. Yoke said he was voting “no” because ‘he didn’t know enough about the merits of the individuals” apl>olnted. Others Dismissed Nine persons not previously announced were included in the list of dismissals. They were: Earl Ten Eyck, tinner; George Adams, machinist; Alvin Reinberg, watchman; Fred McKinney, painter; Harrison Howard, painter; Noah Wilkinson, en-

FEAR CLASHES OVER RIVALRY (Continued From Page 1) arising from the alleged theft of the basketball. School patrons at McCordsville have raised great hue and cry against sending their students here, fearing that consent to the action at this time would blast their chances of getting their school rebuilt and the ultimate loss of their high Bchool charter.' • Land values, McCordsville partisans declare, will drop SSO an acre if the town of 400 loses Its high school. This, together with home-town loyalt yof nonowners of larfd, has encouraged students In their rivalry on the basketball court against Fortville students. At a mass meeting In McCordaville’s First Methodist Church, at which the Rev. G. A. P. Jewel presided, a vote on the proposal of Trustee Harry Wood to send the students to Fortville for the remainder of the term was victorious only by a three-vote margin, and won. then, only after hours had been spent in explaining the inadequacy of buildings McCordsville residents had placed at the trustee’s disposal. Mr. and Mrs. William Kimberiin offered to move out of their eightroom home to keep the students from going to Fortville. Mrs. Kimberlln said that If McCordsville consented to sending its pupils to Fortville, McCordsville never would “amount to anything,”

in the future. She said she feared loss of commissioned high school charter. “Church and School” “Why, we haven’t grot anything now hut a church and a school, and where would we be If we lost the school. Our boys have to carry guns to protect themselves when they go to Fortville to the show. What’ll happen when they go to school under the same roof?” The Methodist Church trustees offered to equip their entire church, except the auditorium, for classes, but County Superintendent Gegfge Vanduyne of Greenfield overruled the proposal because the basement floor Is concrete. which might be injurious to the pupils’ health. Both towns are in Vernon township. Trustee Woods said the schools would be separate In every particular. The township is heavily In debt. McCordsvlUe fears Fortville will use this as an argument against rebuilding the burned school. A committee was appointed tp consult the State finance board to see If the township could issue more bonds to rebuild. If the State board consents. McCordsville will make a determined fight to again separate the township’s high schools next year.
