MILLIONS TAKEN FROM PUBLIC BY POWER COMBINE General Electric Operates Utility Plants in Forty States, Report. Timet Washington Bureau. ISM Aeu) 1 ork Avenue. WASHINGTON, Feb. B.—The American power combine la extracting from the people more than $165,000,000 gross income a year, according to figures just made available. The combine is known along Wall Street at the Electric Bond and Share Company. It is the golden baby of the General Electric Company, being controlled by the same financial group that owns the latter. The-combine now operates in 1,700 communities, scattered through forty States. In the various regions it controls the public utility field through the following operating companies: East: American Gas and Electric Company and Lehigh Power Securities Corporation. South: Southeastern Power and Light Company, National Power and Light Company and New Orleans Public Service Company, Inc. West: American Power and Light Company, and Electric Power and Light Company. Organized in 1905 The Electric Bond and Share Cos., was organized by General Electric in 1905 with a $2,000,000 common capital. Today the common capital has increased in valued to $120,000,000, a sixty-fold Increase. Net earnings of this common stock in 1925 Is estimated at $10,000,000, which does not include an enormous undivided surplus. If divided, the latter probably would add $5,00,000 a year. Nor do these earnings include any of the rake-off allowed the operating companies out in the fields. They represent merely the superprofit or supervising income of th'e General Electric. So profitable has it all been to General Electric that that company in 1923 organized the American and Foreign Power Company, Inc., to spread out in Cuba, Central and South America. How all this information happened to become public is a story. In December, 1924, Senator George Norris of Nebraska launched an attack against the General Electric Cos., branding it as the center of the power monopoly. That was the first break for the public. Norris alleged that no matter to what private power company in the South the Federal government gave its $150,009,000 power project at Muscle Shoals, it would probably be under control of the General Electric. Norris pointed out how General Electric through the Electric Bond and Share Company dominated the Southern power field. Thirteen days after this attack General Electric reorganized its baby. Asa iresult, however, some of the common stock became avail able to the general investment public. Pamphlet Written Thus Investment brokers became interested in just what was going on. And thus Philip M. Tucker, a Boston investment expert, was moved to write for his clients and prospective clients a pamphlet entitled “A Study of the Electric Bond and Share Company.” The figures used here are taken from Tucker’s pamphlet. Tucker says, “The offioers of the company are in no sense responsible for the study, its conclusions or its publicity. The basic figures, except for estimates, are official.” In February, 1926, the Senate ordered the Federal trade commission to probe the General Electric Company’s alleged domination of the power field. The probe is still in progress and probably will hot he completed until late In the present year. In the meantime. Tucker, in

Some boys and ’ girls dread this season of the year because it is report card time. Especially those pupils who are in boarding schools, as they are not at home to explain away any of their poorer marks. Mr. Aldridge received John’s report card in the same mall with John’s letter containing the usual request for a larger allowance. He wrote a short reply stating that enclosed In the letter was a small card containing a comment on the report card and if this comment were heeded a larger allowance would soon follow. But John could not read the card. Can you, do it for himr puzzle answer: The man who won the open golf tournament held at the Los Angeles Country Club was Harry Cooper. To Make Pine Cough , Syrup at Home Ha* no qu*l (or prompt result*. Take* but * moment to make. Save* about $2 ’
Pine is used in nearly all prescriptions and remedies for coughs. The reason is that pine contains several elements that have a remarkable effect in soothing and beating the membranes of the throat and chest. Pine cough syrups are combinations of pine and syrup. The "syrup" part Is usually plain sugar syrup. To make the best pine cough remedy that money can buy, put 2% ounces of Pinex in a pint bottle, and fill up with home-made sugar syrup. Or you can use clarified molasses, honey, or com syrup, instead of sugar syrup. Either way, you make a full pint—more than you can buy ready-made for three times the money. It is pure, good, and tastes very pleasant. You can feel this take hold of a cough or cold in a way that means business. The cough may be dry, hoarse and tight, or may be persistently loose from the formation of phlegm. The cause is the same—inflamed membranes—and this Pinex and Syrup combination will stop it —usually in 24 hours or less. SplenSid, too, for bronchial astlima, hoarseness, or any ordinary throat ailment. Pinex is a highly concentrated compound of genuine Norway pine extract, and is famous the world over for its prompt effect upon coughs. Beware of substitutes Ask your druggist for "2H ounces of Pinex” with directions, and don’t accept anything else. Guaranteed to give absolute satisfaction or money refunded, The Pinex Cos., Ft. Poor Teeth—Poor Health Walls of Teeth Often Conceal Trouble Within The nature of the mouth Is such that It can not on the surface indicate trouble that may be mining the pulp within. Pus pockets, or matter inside the tooth, often poisons the blood for months before the tooth gives trouble enough to drive its owner to the dentist.
Chronic ill health Is being more and more traced to the teeth by medical investigation. Many people now make It a piaotioe to have the teeth examined every six months "on suspicion.” It Is one form of health Insurance. "The People’s Dentists extracted my teeth without pain.
