ELECTRICITY IS ‘DIRT’CHEAP IN ONTARIO CITIES Government-Owned Hydro Plant Also Making Money, Report Shows. Times Washington Bureau. WASHINGTON, Feb. s.—How much are you paying tor electricity? Here’s a little shock for you then. Cititzens of tjventy-seven towns and cities in Ontario, Canada, are getting theirs for less than two cents per kilowatt hour, according to the latest report from the Government operated Ontaria hydroelectric system. And the system is making money. During 1924, the year covered by the report, it earned exactly $1,163,910 surplus, after making full allowance for depreciation of property, interest and for the sinking fund which will retire the invested capital in thirty years. $18,798,*23 Business The system is now serving 386 municipalities, townships, rural dis tricts and industrial companies. It did an $18,798,723 business in 1924, as compared with $10,981,942 in 1921. The average cost of electricity to citizens in 207 towns and cities was 4.9 cents per kilowatt hour. Citizens in sixty-six towns lighted and heated their homes for less than 3 cents pei kilowatt hour. The lowest charge reported was 1.1 cents per kilowatt hour in Ottawa, the capital of Canada. Ottawa has about 103,100 population. In 1911, before the Government started operating its own power system, Ottawa people were paying *8 cents. Toronto, with 535,000 population, is getting electricity for 1.9 cents. In 1911, it also was paying 8 Cents to the private power companies. Hamilton, with 100,000 population, is now paying 1.7 cents as compared with 8 cents in 1911; London, Ontario, with 60,000 population, is paying 1.6 cents as compared with 9 cents formerly. Cost Declines The 1924 report shows that under Government operation the cost of electricity has been steadily declining throughout the province. When the Government in 1914 first started serving the people of Barrie, for example, it charged 7.3 cents per kilowatt, as cofn pared with the 9cent private company charge. By 1924 the charge had been reduced to 1.6 cents. Electricity has been made so cheap in Ontario that the people are using it even for cooking purposes. During the last ten years more than 44,000 electric ranges have been installed, it is estimated. REMODELLING PLANNED ELKHART, Ind., Feb. s.—Plans were under way h£re today to carry out the proposal of the Chicago Hardware Company to enlarge its plant here at a cost of $60,000.
