MOTORIST TOLD CARE TO GIVE CAR IN WINTER Radiator and Battery Need to Be Watched in Cold Weather. That the average motorist has a great deal to learn about the care of his car was demonstrated to ,a greater extent than ever before by the experience of the auto doctors, of the motor clubs In handling car trouble during the cold spell which recently swept over the country, Todd Stoops, Secretary manager of the Hoosler Motor Club declared today. Analysis of service rendered by the club and other A. A. A. clubs throughout the country developed the fact that the average motorist who comes to grief In cold weather, usually does so because he fails to take normal precautions in two important factors governing the wellbeing of his car. These factors are: The right kind of anti-breeze solution In the radiator and the rifcalntenance of a sufficient charge In the battery to prevent it from freezing. “Most of the trouble encountered during this exceptionally cold spell could have been obviated If car owners had kept their batteries charged

and had kept the right amount of solution in the radiators. ‘‘A battery that Is completely discharged will freeze when the temperature is 20 degrees above zero: a battery that Is only one-fourth charged will freeze at zero, while If a battery is one half charged the temperature will go below zero before It freezes. This appears simple enough to remember, but thousands never think of battery temperatures until the damage Is done. As soon as a battery that has been frozen Is charged, it will disintegrate. “Don’t add water to the battery unless you are about to run the | engine. This precaution ts necessary | so that the charging current will j circulate and mix the water w wlth the electrolyte. Otherwise the water is lighter than the solution and remains on' top and will freeze at 32 degrees above zero. "An important thing to remember is thut motors freeze first around j the water pump and to start them in this condition will often break the pump or hear the key on pump shaft. Putting hot water in the radiator will help in starting. With Ford cars, where the motor is stiff and hard to turn over, It Is helpful to remember that by Jacking up one of the rear wheels the motor Will turn over much easier.
