LETTER FROM PAULA PERIE}R TO SYDNEY CARTON. I couldn't talk to you last night, dear Syd. My heart was too full. Some way I felt that everything I have in the world to cling to was going out of my life. You must have thought that I was very unappreciative of your kindness and friendship as I had nothing to say when you were leaving your friends for a long journey with the possibility of never returning. Dear Syd, my heart was too full. I have not so many friends that I could let my best one go without a wrench that woudl tear my heartstrings. Do you know, Sydney Carton, what you have been to me? l.iet me tell you. You were the one person, man or woman, who. after my >aby came, gave me a desire to live. You are the .only man in all my life that I have really trusted. You have made me believe in human goodness. You have brought back my faith in God. All the time you were sitting there in my little drawing room at the Plaza, . probably thinking 1 had grown hard and callous. 1 was trying to open my breaking heart so I could talk to you. But. I could only feel its hurt. I could not speak of it. Today I am writing to tell you that

“Little beggar!” grumbles Linda’s husband trying to, look fierce. “Always begging for something! AVishes are certainly horses with her and she rides me down!” 1
But he likes it. He'd be the last one in the world to admit it but Linda's husband likes it. For Unda is worth the highest price he can pay. Bhe’s pretty. She’s whimsical. She's a'jolly pal and a sympathetic listener. And she keeps him always on the move to keep up with her. She has always fascinated him, and she's smart enough to keep it up. Her drolleries are his delight; her caprices are his boast. For Linda is clever. She never puts him in debt, not she, and she carefully stows away a g'>odly sum out of her large allowance each month to soak away in her rainy-day fund. But she keeps old Herbert humpitg on the money question, keeps him ambitious and enterprising and though he insists that he is working hard so as to have money for the children’s education, he’s really cudgeling his brains and getting the best out of them for his vivacious, expensive Linda.

R-- E G. You can do both if you are clever enough. It is a noble thing to sacrifice youth, beauty and vitality, on the altar of old age and children. But strangely enough, neither husband nor children appreciate these sacrifices when they are made at the expense of mother herself, home and environment. So be wise enough to keep your husband's love and joy your management, in you. and your child’s respect for COOLIDGE NEW HAT Said to Be Yargest in Waslrington— Gift of I Ate Mr. Munsey. it is to you, dear friend,, that I owe everything v good that my life has held. I gave my love —myself to Jack —and I went down into the depths to pay for it. I do not owe John Alden Prescott anything. I gave my ambition and hard work to thj*t kindly old Jew who made me a moving picture actress, and I made very much more money for him than I have for myself. I do not owe him anything, for even his kindess was tinged with commercialism. But you, dear Syd, I can never repay wliat you have given the. To you and Leslie Prescott I shall be In debt forever. 1 can never tell you just how I feel toward Leslie, Syd. Honestly, I never knew there could be a woman like her. Up to the time when she adopted little Jack when I, ul; most Insane with hunger and shamej left him outside her door. I felt that; my hand was against all my sex, even her, and it seemed as thou*gh all women’s hands were against me. Oh. Syd, I wish you were not going. I’m sure I shall miss you in the future.
