FIRST OF NINE MURDERERS TO ‘SWING’ FRIDAY Death Row Is Crowded in Cook County Jail —Five Die Feb. 19. rlu United Press CHICAGO, Jan. 37,—First of nine men, who sit in “murderers” row at the county jail will hang Friday morning. He is Campbell McCarthy, strappling young Negro of 19, who slew Christian Getzen, a watchman. Lite spans of six more, including five white men, are measured by grim red circles on the calendar in the office of Warden George W. Wetdeling, two floors below. Sam Washington, another Negro, will hang Feb. 13, for the murder of his common law wife. There is a particularly heavy ring about the date Feb. 19. Unless last minute reprieves are granted, five white men will be hanged that day. The men are Henry J. Fernekes, "Midget” bandit and killer; John Flannery, Daniel McGelghan, Joe Holmes and Jack Woods. Drake Bandits * The first were convicted of murdering a building and loan company official during a hold-up; Holmes and Woods were participants in the sensational hold-up of the exclusive Drake hotel hereilast summer. The hold-up occurred in the afternoon when the lobby was thronged. All the clerks were herded into one office and one of them was ’shot to death when he failed to act as promptly as the bandits commanded. The five bandits seized a sum estimated at SIO,OOO. and fled in an automobile. Only one escaped, the others being shot down or captured in a wild automobile chase through the street. Holmes and Woods, 25 and 24, respectively, are from the western range country. They are quiet, talk little and face death stoically. Fernekes, Flannery and McGeighan are typical city thugs. Two More The other two men for whom the date of execution will be set- -later are Ralph Reno and Raymond Costello. Reno killed a man and woman during a quarrel. Costello murdered a girl. “They seem to take their fate philosophically,” the warden said. "They do no whining. They lived by violence and seem willing to die that way.” There are seventy-five other murderers in the county jail awaiting trial or action by the grand jury. Fearing possible attempts at a jail delivery, policemen guard the jqll day and night.
BRIDGE BIDS ASKED Highway Body to tiet Contracts for Fourteen Improvements. Total cost is approximately $300,000. Two of the bridges are overhead structures on State Rd. 40 in Scott County, "separating crossings with the B. & O. Railroad, the Pennsylvania and the Interstate. Other bridges are on the following roads: No. 22, in Crawford County; No. 34, in Fayette; No. 25, in La Grange; three bridges on No. 39, in Marion; No. 12, in Owen; two or. Indianapolis’ first Charleston marathon will be staged tonight. Believed to be the first of its kind ever held, the contest will be among couples instead of individuals. A Detroit man claims he has danced continuously an hour and forty-six minutes. About forty-five couples are entered in the long-distance, endurance affair to be held at the Green Mill dance gardens, one mile eust of the State fairground on Maple Road, according to E. W. Mushrush, manager, who said he was the city’s _ first Charlestoner, having introduced the difficult gymnastics last summer at the Broad Ripple pavilion. BUTLER ASKS LEASE College Athletic Contests May Be Hold at Fairground Next Season. In an effort to assure themselves of adequate floor space for* next season's basketball contests, Butler University athletic authorities have asked the State board of agriculture to lease them the manufacturers’ building at the State fairground from Dec. 1, 1926, to March 1, 1927. The matter will be considered at the next meeting of the board, according to E. J. Barker, secretarytreasurer.

ASK COURTHOUSE ZONES Henry Fleming, Courthouse custpdian, today recommended to Harry Dunn, county auditor, that special zones be made in front of three Courthouse entrances to facilitate deliveries to the building. Fleming said by prohibiting automobiles from parking in front of each entrance persons would be given a chance to drive up to the building and alight. Fleming said the pile of rubish on the north Courthouse grounds will be removed soon. Cold weather has prevented the debris from being gioved sooner, he said.
