COMMERCIAL FLYING LAWS GET SUPPORT # U. S. Chamber of Commerce Points Out Future Possibilities. Legislation to promote the development of commercial aviation in this country Ih being urged by the Chamber of Conftmerce of the United States, according to a letter received today by the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce from the national organization. Creation of a Bureau of Civil Aeronautics in the department of commerce, and establishment of an adequate air mail service between the larger cities are two of the outstanding points in the program of the Chamber. Need of Federal laws regulating aviation is pointed out. because, as the letter states, “laws have been enacted by a few municipal and State governments with a view of controlling the flight of aircraft within their jurisdiction. While In some instances an attempt has been made to follow a unitorm basis in these laws and regulations, others differ materially in their provisions.’’ After an extonsivo study, it is the national Chamber's conclusion that in many localities commercial air lines could be successfully operated. "Air transportation,’’ the letter goes on to say," can readily, and to a large degree, be coordinated with the present forms of transportation, including railroad, express. Interurban electric, motor bus and truck facilities for the collection and distribution of goods In territory .eurroundlng the air terminals? The present indications are that these facilities can be utilized to an advantage over a radius of 30 to 300 miles, depending on the locality.” Some of the uses of airplanes in the future, as set out in the latter, are to transport valuable commercial commodities, to carry business mail, to patrol ‘forest reserves against the constant iinenaco of fires, to aid in engineering and scientific inwfestigationa and assist in the national defense. The increasing number of landing fields being established by municipalities along the air lanes also receives notice from the National Chamber. Indiana, Kansas, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have passed laws authorizing municipalities to acquire and maintain landing fields. In the future, it is pointed out, navigational aids to aircraft may be Installed similar to those guiding vessels at sea, including aerial ligh'ing and signal stations, meteorological services and radio facilities.
Nose Doesn’t Know Auto Fumes Expert Warns Monoxide Gas Is Colorless, Odorless and Tasteless,
By Dr. Vernon A. Chapman, Member Gorgras Memorial Institute, (Written for the United Pres?) CHICAGO, Jan. 21.—“ Tour nose knows" is an apt phrase, but In every day life, especially where life and health are concerned, it’e not always safe to take the words seriously. Your nose knows many times, but do not depend upon, your nose to tell you when your garage Is being filled with deadly carboiv monoxide gas. You cannot smell this gas; your nose does not know. This deadly gase is manufactured while you are warming top the motor on a cold winter morning before starting out for the day, or while you are lying under the car, doing an odd repair Job while the motor Is running. It is also be- ■ ing manufactured by gasoline motors so "frequently used on the farms. The ggs Is one of the products of combustion, and the poorer the motor is running the greater will be tho supply of carbon monoxide being produced. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless and tastless gas. Therein lies its danger. This poisonous gas may be coming from the exhaust of your motor in great quantities and you will not know it. It permeates all parts of a closed roomy to the same extent, if given swTicient time. 'The poison action of carbon monoxide is direetjy due to changes in the blood, which reduce its oxygen carrying capacity. At the identical time you aro being poisoned with this gas from your motor, the lung action increases, automatically and without your knowledge, you breathe in more of the contaminated air in an effort to get more oxygen. The increase speeds up the rate of saturation of tho blood by the gas. This in turn intensities the damage of thefcxygen shortage. You breathe still more rapidly, until the blood has become so changed by the poison that it cannot contain ot* give' the necessary oxygen to sustain life. Just how much the victim of this poisoning suffers before death la not known. To revive an unconscious person, who is the victim of carbon monoxide take him into tho open air and apply artificial respiration. Do not leave the patient just because ho has beguh to ■breathe. He is apt to stop breathing and need artificial respiration manipulations. Jf tho physician is ablo to administer oxygen, that will tfelp. Probably (he most efficient mixture in treating those affected is a 5 per cent carbon dioxide and oxygen mixture. Recently Professor Hendersbn of Yule University and his co-worker. Dr. Haggard, proved its efficiency. The carbon dioxide added to air,* inhaled, stimulates the breathing.
