' WEEKLY BOOK REVIEW . In Which a Reader of Books Calls for Much Help
By Walter D. Hickman i j ELP” is my cry today to r I—l the whole world. Am tak- * M ing irv a lot of territory, >ut I need help, much of that brand. Have just finished “Volonor” by Glen B. Winship, published by rhomag Seltzer, New' York. At times during the reading of ,his novel, I W'anted to throw the Dook all over my flat and scream ?or help. Then I would make a resolution :hat I would never finish the book, rher*. after the “attack" I would find myself nicely and comfortably put in ay best chair, reading the thing again with interest. At times “Volonor” is yellow and impossible. At times it is so melodramatic and so impossibly over drawn that 1 became disgusted. And then, suddenly, the author would do one of those strange tricks of the writing game—he would get down to realistic business and do a fine job of drawing a dramatic situation. -. “Volonor’ is the name of anew Republic squatted in a beautiful area of water. It was founded by a New York multi-millionaire for the purpose of protecting his sister from fortune hunters. But the dangerous idea back of the- founding of the island was that of doing away completely with marriage laws. The labor of its citizens was to support the woman and children. The founder of “Volonor” maintained that his island republic was ndt a free love colony. John Wentworth, founder of Volbnor, in an interview given to the press in the book, states: “There will be no marriage law, and that statement works both ways. There will lie no low against marriage or for marriage. If your religious convictions tells ytu to marry, there will not be the slightest objection but the marriage will not be recognized except as a form of contract. If a marriage contract is broken one party can prove that he or she has suffered an actual dam age, the injuied party can recover in the same way as in cases of other contract violations. But note that. I say ‘actual’ damage. There will

We intend to make it unnecessary for a woman either to sell herself for a meal ticket or to enter /the industrial field and run the rikk of losing the greatest blessing that can ever fail her lot—motherhood. We expect to recognize that a womqn giving birth to a child is performing as great a service to humanity as a man can perform in feeding and clothing that child. It is man's duty to provide nourishment and protectioir, and we propose that he shall not escape that duty. “Women and children will be the wards of the State, supported by a tax of 50 per cent on all men. own Individuality and independence, but will not be peimitted to vote or to hold office or to own anything but personal property.” In’ working out the actual founding of this colony, there is a recital of some of the blackest melodrama of life and sex I have ever encountered. At times it is a mess. There is one passage near the book when a woman desires to place her body on an imaginary altar of bodily lust, that is so crude and disgusting that I became violent and tossed the book to one side. But when I cooled off, I finished it. • “Volonor” is the strangest combination of high ideals and lowly sex impulses that l have ever enCountered. I still need help on this one. To me it is the strangest mess of great and bad things that l have ever ran up against in what is supposed to be literature.
