LETTER FROM MELVILLE SARTORIS TO LESLIE PRESCOTT Dear Madonna of the Snows, It has been so long since I have written you that I wonder, Madonna Mia. if you have an,idea that I have forgotten you. If you have, please dismiss it immediately, because 1 think of you always, which means every waking hour. But I have not been In port for nearly a week. We have been having abominable weather and ran into this out-of-the world place this morning. Os course, I had not expected to touch this port and consequently had no cablegrams or letters and had to rely on some old papers that had been left there by the last occasional ship, for any news of the world. You can imagine my surprise and joy when I happened to read your name. You had sold your glorious pearls to Paula Perier and Karl Whitney and had placed the money In trust for your two boys. Don’t think that I was happy at the thought that you had sold your pearls. Even though the correspondent seemed to think that you had some superstition about them and had attributed much-of the unhappiness that had come to you to their possession and consequently you had determined not to keep them. The papers said that Karl Whitney had given the pearls he had purchased to charity and of course Mips Perier can have no superstition when It comes to being the possessor of the finest pearls In all filmdom. Os course, it would be foolish for anyone as superstitious as I to say to you he did not believe in your superstition. On reading that you had sold these lovely Jewels, however I felt I must write and tell you that again you came up In my memory just as you were when my HOOSIER IS APPOINTED Elliott Takes Langley’s Mace on Building Committee. Pu Timet Special WASHINGTON. Jan. 38.—Representative R. N. Elliott of Indiana, has been appointed a member of the United States Public Buildings Commission. He takes the place of J. W. Langley of Kentucky, who Is in Federal prison for a Volstead act violation.
