COFFIN BACKING MAY SWING TO ( JAMES OGDEN Rep. Updike Expected to Have Struggle in Race for Re-election. .Representative Ralph E. Updike is not sure of support from George V. Coffin’s machine for renomination next spring, politicians said today. Updike, backed personally by Senator Arthur B. Robinson, will face a struggle to obtain the renomination custom decrees shall go to an incumbent. James M. Ogden, corporation counsel in the last administration, is deemed certain to be a candidate with the support of powerful elements in both Coffin and Lemcke organizations. It is know Mayor Duvall is favorable to Ogden, who was the only prominent Shank administration head to speak for him in the election race, and that Ralph A. Lemcke views Ogden with liking., Ogden naturally would have support of remnants of the Shank faction. Some Coffin leaders are considering lining -up for Ogden because they wish to present a strong ticket. Ogden is to date unopposed by the IClan faction, which is in sympathy with his prohibition views. Former Representative Merrill Moores .is considering entering the race, but he must llrst win the A;newal of his strength with the Lemcke faction that supported him in days of yore. Alexander G. Cavins, assistant United States district attorney, and former State Senator Franklin T. McCray also are mentioned as entrants.
