WASHINGTON,' Jnn. 15.—Close to " ,000 new manufacturing enterprises >.ive been established in the South -,ring the last two years, according to estimates in the hands of the Senate finance committee. These enterprises are said to represent an investment of nearly SBOO,000,000. The estimates are vouched for by William S. Bennet, former New York Congressman, who submitted them to Senator Smoot of Utah, the com- - mittee chairman, for use in Senate tax reduction deliberations. Bennet has beeii in business in Mississippi the last bix years. Bennet' cites the following items as evidence of what can be expected from the South in the future. * Railroads Set Record 1. Southern railroads set a record for tho entire country by earning G. 6 per cent return on investment during the first, ten months of 1925. 2. From 1922 to 1924 the south spent jmore than $750,000,000 annually on new building and the 1925 expenditure is believed to have been close to $1,000,000. 2. Tho South now produces oneof the world’s petroleum, about of the world’s tobacco, tTbout 60 per cent of the world's cotton, about 85 per cent of the world's sulphur. Exports to North 4. The South is annually exporting more than 500,000 cars of vege* , tables and fruits to the North. 5. Deposits in souther/i banks increased from $1,700,000,000 in 1910 to $6,500,000,000 in 1923. 6: Life insurance written in the South in 1923 was 44 per cent of the total for the entire country, as compared with 21 per cent in 1921, • 7. Consumption of Portland cement jumped from 15,000.000 barrels in 1914 to more thaji 28,000,000 barrels in 1923. \ S. Open-account deposits in the Atlatitac: Fpderal reserve district increased 35 per cent from October.
