NEW POLICE CHIEF ASSAILS GAMBLING Games of Chance as Breeders of Crime —Elans to Stop Even Matching of Pennies.

Gambling is one of the chief contributors to crime, Police Chief Claude F. Johnson said today, in connection with his announced intent to stop games of chance in Indianapolis. Johnson said he would try to stop gambling from matching pennies on up to the big dice game. "I do not wish to infer that every man who gambles commits serious crimes,’' he said. “But I do mean that most men who gamble lose, and that those without good incomes resort to thievery, banditry and sometimes murder to avenge gambling losses. “"Murders among Negroes as a result of dice games are comnion. I believe that some big games have been going on with locations being cTronicheadcold k Simple Method of Prevention Nasal catarrh Is not only dlsa greebale and offensive, but It will lead to serious trouble. shifted from one building to another. 1 ’hope to stop all these. Betting on pool games where the wager is tossed, into the pocket, from which the winner takes it; the domino and rum games in poolrooms in which tab is kept and ,the "pay off” is made aftc-r the game is finished; and the slot machines, are all gambling. The only difference is that the money is not placed in the open. “The evils come from the fact that it is an easy way to make money. An expert handler of the pool cue usually becomes a hustler In some billiard parlor and quits his job. His earnings are from small town sharks, who believe they can come to the city and take the city boys. When the ‘fish’ do not come fast enough to keep him in funds, the ‘hustler’ rarely resorts to a legitimate occupation. Police records show they then resort to crime. “The first hold-up may be pulled without future intentions, to relieve a temporary x embarrassment. But banditry, like gambling, carries lots of thrills and fascinations and its road generally leads to the penitentiary.” OIL HOLDINGS SOLD $5,000,000 Deal, Involving Local Interests, Is Completed.
