GREATER MUSIC CONTEST TO BE HELD THIS YEAR More Than 2,000 Students Took Part in State-Wide Affair in 1925. More than 2,000 Indiana high school students took part in the State music contests held in Indianapolis last May under auspices of the Fine Arts committee of the Chamber of Commerce, of which J. I. Holcomb was chairman, Indianapolis and Crawfords ville high schools carried away the honors. Contests among bands, orchestras, mixed choruses, girls’ glee clubs and boys’ glee clubs of the State, were conducted at various places in the city. Winners were: Arsenal Technical, first and Shortridge winning second in band contests; shortridge, first and Arsenal Technical second, in the orchestra contests. Arsenal Technical, first and Crawfordsville second, iri mixed chorus contest; Crawfordsville, first. Arsenal Technical, second in the girls' glee club contests; Arsenal Technical, first; Crawfordsville, and Emmerich Manual Training, second in the boys’ glee club contest. Already plans for an elaborate contest in 1926 are being formulated and an even greater response on the part of State schools is expected. The Fine Arts Committee in 1924 undertook for the first time in the United States to sponsor State wide music contests of the nature of those which it has conducted for the past two years. The success of the first undertaking led the committee to enlarge its operations during 1925 and more than twice as many high school students participated in the following year. Also the committee Sponsored the concerts of Max Kosen, violinist and Virginia Bea, coloratura soprano. Funds for the awarding of prizes were made available by the Merchants Association of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis News, the Indianapolis Star, the Baldwin Piano Company, the Fuller-Ryde Music Company, the Leedy Manufacturing Company, the Starr Piano Company, the Pearson Piano Company, the Carlin Music Company, the Christena-Teague Piano Company and the Brunswick Shop. The total awards amounted to $750.

INCREASE MADE IN CITY CONSTRUCTION
Fewer Homes, More Apartments Built in 1925, Figures for First Eleven Months of Year Show.
Figures in the city building commissioner’s office show that Indianapolis built fewer homes than In 1924, but greatly exceeded the previous year’s record in erecting apartment houses. Total valuation of building permits issued during the first eleven months of this year was $24,582,894 as compared to a total of $24,281,519 for a corresponding period in 1924. An analysis of the two sets of figures gives some interesting comparisons. In the first place, 1925 had far outstripped 1924 at the half way mark, the end of June. Total value of the permits for the first half of last year was $11,792,844, while the 1925 total for a similar period was $14,177,661. Then 1925 fell into a

slump, the total for the year being but little more than for 1924. homes for the first eleven months of this year reached $9,762,763, as compared to the 1924 total of $9,797,768. In 1925 total value of apartments (lifted as tenements by the city) was $2,700,000 for the first eleven months. In 1924 similar months ran up a total of only $1,954,000. Combination apartments and business buildings totaled $142,935 this year, whereas in 1924 the total for the same period was $77,500. In permit a for new business houses 1926 forged far ahead. The total of first and second-class business buildings was $3,035,400, as compared to $2,895,565 for the same eleven months of 1924. Third and fourth-class business buildings totaled $1,466,905, an Increase over the $1,070,625 of 1924. Industrial buildings, third and fourth class, for which permits were
obtained In 1925, were valued at SBOO,000. In 1924 only $653,176 of these permits were Issued. First and second class industrial buildings suffered a slump this year, with a total of $165,000 compared to the total of $261,000 of 1924. Publio officials evidently, heeded the clamor for economy, as non-flre-proof public buildings built in 1925 were valued at $460,670, a large increase over the $173,193 of last year. Fireproof public buildings built this year were valued at $1,730,500 less than the 1924 figure of $1,758,996. In all, a total of 4,885 permits were issued for new buildings in the last eleven months, while the same period of 1924 saw 5,236. The Increase in total valuation is explained by the fact, that the 1925 buildings are of greater value.
