| j— —i ATURE has perhaps been IWI ltin<ler to Java than to any II similar area in the world. It is a long narrow island—66o miles long and 40 to 125 miles broad — covering an area of 50,557 square miles, almost as large as Illinois. Forests of valuable timbers cover one-fourth qf it. The most important of all the timber trees is the teak. Os the many others the upas (the native word for “poison”), one of Java’s largest forest trees, is interesting because of the belief held until 1844, that It was extremely polsbnous and destroyed all plant and animal life in its neighborhood. There is indeed a poisonous juice In the bark which is used by the natives on the points- of their arrows, but otherwise the tree is harmless. The rich black soil is prodigiously fertile, producing a profusion of flowers, fruits and cultivated crops and concealing most of the villages in luxuriant verdure. The climate ranges from tropical to temperate ait one ascends the mountains. In the lowlands are the sugar ana cotton plantations and the flooded rice fields, plowed by the strange mousecolored buffalo of the island. A little higher, are the famous coffee and tea plantations, and the groves of cinchona trees, which yield a large proportion of the world’s supply of quinine. Higher yet grow tobacco, cereal crops and potatoes and other vegetables. Its population of about 35.000.000 makes Java one of the most densely peopled regions in the world. The two chief groups of natives —the Javanese and the Sundese—speak distinct languages, though!” they are both of the Malayan race. Furthermore. each of these languages has three complete vocabularies, one ..used to speaking to superiors, one to equals, and one to Inferiors. Though simple and superstitious, the natives are peaceable and Industrious, nearly all of them being employed on the plantations. Cockand a sort of Punch-and-Judy show are their chief amusements, and they are passionately fond of the weird music of orchestras composed largely of gongs and drums. The ancient faith was Hinduism.' as is attested oy the many ruins of
NEW CITY RULE PLAN SEEN IN SHANK LIASON Politicians Predict Drive for Commission Form of Government. What will Mayor Shank and his political cohorts obtain for services rendered recently to Klansmen by way of appointments to the police force and other city jobs? Politicians debated this question today and one theory predominated. The theory is that the onslaught to dethrone George V. Coffin, Republican boss, from control of the obunty organization next spring will bring a commission form of government movement, with a Job for Mayor Shank as one of the five commissioners and positions for leading Klansmen as eventualities. It was said Jewett-Lemcke leaders were to be offered representation on the hoard. Shank is drumming constantly on the commission form theme. He spoke on it at Cincinnati and has" reiterated his views at least at four meetings of various city bodies. Attacks Outsider | In the discussion Shank usually j attacks employing an outsider to ; manage the city’s affairs. The (ommission form of government is not the city manager form, which provides for employment of a dfistintereoted business executive, unfettered by political entanglements. A Klon councilman-elect- said to day the appointment of twelve street officials to serve during the period between the Shank and Duvall administrations was part of the Klan-Shank deal. Doubt also was expressed whether William H. Armitage, Shank’s political general, will cooperate In the new arrangement. Hogue Denies Joseph L. Hogue, city controller, however, denied he had participated in the movement. Shank increased the Klan bond by appointing Jesse McClure director of recreation to succeed Edward McBride, whose term expired Jan. 1. McClure was selected by Duvall for the position, and Shank is simply hastening the event. John W. Friday will become Deintt cratia board of safety member, Roy C. splendid temples. The great temple Boro Budor is probably the largest Buddhist temple in the world. Its states and bas-reliefs placed side by side would form a line three miles long. Since the Arab conquest in the fifteen century most .of the people have been Mohammedans. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish relations with the natives (about 1,520), but were soon supplanted by the Dutch, who now rule the Island. Holland derives from this colony a considerable portion of its revenues. The native sultans are in the pay of the colonial government and have only nominal authority. Most of the exports of sugar, coffee, tea, indigo, cinchona, tobacco, rubber, copra, and tin go to Holland. The production of petroleum is also important. ’ COOLIDGE GAINS GROUND Bv United Press PLYMOUTH, Vt., Dec. 31Colonel John Coolidge, father of the President is “gaining ground gradually,’’ Dr. Albert M. Cram, his physician, told the United Press today.
