PERMANENT FARM RELIEF PROGRAM BEING WORKED OUT Administration Sanctions Compromise Plan Involving Establishment of Commission to Purchase Surplus < Products Without Fixing Prices. Bv United Press WASHINGTON, Dec. 28.—Prospects for permanent and far-reaching farm relief legislation, sought vainly for year’s, took a boom today as a compromise plan for absorbing surplus products was being worked out. • ' The plan, involving establishment of a farm commission which would have charge of purchasing surplus supplies in times of plenty without involving the Government in a price fixing venture was to be thrashed out during an all-State bankers’ conference in Des Moines, la., beginning tomorrow.
Senators Brookhart, Independent Republican, Cummins, regular Republican and Representative Haugen, Republican, all of lowa, will discuss the project which is understood to have the sanction of Secretary of Agriculture Jardine. The plan is more far-reaching than the Government heretofore has sanctioned but it represents a compromise from the price fixing proposals advanced by progressives and hence its chances of passing Congress are greatly enhanced. CONFERENCE IS UNIQUE Leaders Promise to Lay Aside Politics at Meeting. Bv United Press DES MOINES, Dec. 28.—-A conference unique in the history of agriculture will be held here tomorrow for the purpose of formulating a unified program for farm relief. The entire lowa delegation in Congress, members of the lowa Bankers' Association who called the meeting, agricultural leaders of the various cooperative groups and business men will attend. Leawers have promised to lay political issues aside and give the “All-Iowa” agricultural meeting their support. Spokesmen for the Washington delegation are Senator Cummins and Representative Dickinson. They will review the Government's plans for aiding agriculture and discuss marketing proposals soon to be considered by the House and Senate. Coming at a time when farmers throughout the middlewest are clamoring for special legislation to save them from lqw prices, the meeting will be watched with great interest by officials at Washington. Tremendous pressure has been brought to bear on the administration by co-operative groups for some kind of machinery to dispose of crops in such a way as would enable farmers to realize cost of production plus a fair margin of profit. Surplus Is Problem President Coolidge and Secretary Jardine are said to agree that the question of surplus crops is one of the most important confronting agriculture today and that relief should be offered at once. Just how this can be done is the problem which faces- the conference tomorrow. Divergent views held by farm groups in the past have been a great hindrance in arriving at a relief plan acceptable to the Preddent and Jardine. But should a unified plan be arrived at tomorrow, leaders feel cer-

LOVE DEFEATS PRISON’S BARS (Continued From Page 1) whpre the “Music Box Revue” was last week. Nicky joined her there as soon as he was released from prison and had time to visit a taildr. Being a clown on the stage doesn’t put one in the habit of expressing one’s emotions soberly, So when Fanny, in Milwaukee, was told that Nicky was to be released, she simply let out a whoop, cried, “There is a Santa Claus,”, and burst out laughing. ThaJ wa * all- But it said volumes. Fanny Brice didn’t know Nicky was a thief when she married him. They lived in an apartment in New York, for which she paid the rent. They had two children. When Nicky was arrested as the "master mind” in the big bond theft, Fanny enjoyed a good laugh. Or—well, maybe the laugh was a little bit forced. Anyway, she laughed. is as simple as our baby. I live with Nicky, and I guess I know how much of a master mind he’a got.” But down under the surface—well, maybe Fanny was right. Nicky Arn stein couldn't be a master mind to her. He was Just the easy-going, good-natured husband who liked to stay home and play with the babies while Fanny was at t.he theater —the understanding pal who “keeps quiet when I wake up cranky in the morning,” as she put it. Fanny stuck by him during his trial. She sat in the crowded courtroom with a pathetic little smile on her face, flashing him a look of sympathy when he glanced her way from the witness stand, dabbing her nose with an inadequate llttlo hand kerchief when he was convicted, and telling hjm to “look funny, dear.” when they posed for photographers Just before he was led away to prison. And Fanny is still sticking to “her man.” “No girl should permit a man’s prison record to interfere with her love for Idm,” she said. “True love overcomes all obstacles.” “Have you ever waited and watched for somothlng, always hoping that your dreams would come true?
