SCHOOL NICKEL Tlic Metal _ O Used to Coat Other HELPS ' "' Copyright. Compton’s Pictured Encyclopedia Feature Service ——
SLTHOUGH the American coin called the “nickel” gets Its name from the metal, it contains only one-fourth nickel, the rest being copper. In this alloy the red color of the copper is entirely masked by the nickel. Nickel Is a metallic element, white with a faint yellow tinge, hard, ductile, malleable, highly magnetic, and capable of taking a high poish. This last property, coupled with the fact that it rusts very slowly, makes it useful as a coating for other metals. The nickel coat is applied by the process of electroplating. Alloyed with two parts of copper and one of zinc, nickel form a bright silvery metal known as “German silver,” largely used for making cutlery, table ware, and as a basis for silver plated ware. Although most of us know nickel chiefly in the forms just mentioned these uses are comparatively unimportant and take only about 20 per cent of the total annual supply. Nearly 80 per cent of th<j nickel used in the United States goes into the manufacture of nickel steel, an alloy which is especially adapted to withstand repeated strains. It is therefore used in armor plate, cannon, structural work, bridges, railroad rails at cuves, steel castings, engine forgings and shaftings and axles especially In automobiles and railroad cars. Combined with copper and rolled into sheets, nickel Is used for bands on shells and bullet jackets. Alloyed with copper, iron and cobalt, it forms a valuable rustresisting material which 1b largely employed by the United States Navy for propellers and propeller shaftand has many important <-' uses, as for valves, pu-

roofing materials. A combination of nickel steel with manganese, silicon and chromium gives the hard alloy invar, which is much used for measuring implements and pendulum rods because It iy practically non-ex-pansive with! nnormal temperature variations. A nickel steel containing carbon called platinite has almost the same expansion under heat as glass, and so may be used as a substitute for platinum for wires In Incandescent electric bulbs. Nickel is dissolved with difficulty by most acids except nitric acid, which readily attacks it, and forms a green solution. The green liquid often seen In peculiarly shaped vessels in the windows of drug stores is likely to be a nickel salt dissolved in water. Tho world’s chief source of nickel Is In the mines of Sudbury, Ontario, where the principal ore Is called “pentlandite.” amounts come from the islands of New Caledonia and Tasmania. Nickel also occurs free In meteorites, but this source is of no commercial value. - V THIEVES OBTAIN $2,000 Jewelry Windows Robbed While Scores Pass Stores Bu United Pres GARY, Ind., Dec. 28.—Two daring gem thieves who stole four diamond rings worth $2,000 from a Broadway Jewelry store Saturday night were hunted by police today. Across the Desk With Busy Men Dealers Predict Increase % in Muscial Instrument Sales.
By Kador Winget USICAL Instrument business in 1926 will show a big i___J increase and we anticipate a general improvement in conditions,” said R. B. Ilodgln, sales manager of the instrument department of the Carlin Music Company. The volume of sales has been steadily increasing for the past three years and 1925 showed a Jump over the preceding yeur, according to Hodgin. Business conditions are judged over the last three years because of a general price cut on all instruments in 1922. With the slump in values the sales Increased. A steady level has been maintained since that time but musical merchants look for a rise in the coming year. Increased prices in other lines of merchandise and the general prosperity of the country has led to the inflation, dealers believe. 4—— | UT strings for musical InstruICml ments have advanced 20 tqi Many dealers are at a loss to explain the increase. “The recent increase in musical Instrument strings has been due to the boosting of prices by surgical supply companies,” opined R. K. Stradman, sales manager of the Instrument department of the FullerRyde Music Company. The surgical houses are willing to pay higher prices for gut and the consequently has been pulled up by this artificial stimulation. Trumpets are selling better than other wind Instruments at the present time, said Hodgin. Free Instructions in this line of music has stimulated activity and more teachers are to be found now than in the past. ANY young men are working their way through college and —.. high school by playing In bands and orchestras. Dealers say they sell more Instruments to men and boys now than at any other time. The case wljh which a musical education can be obtained Is one reason for the increase In the popularity of music among the younger set. All of the local high schools now are offering free instruction in their bands and Butler University recently formed anew band organization. In the past, n boy’s parents would pay a nominal price for a cornet and then spend a young fortune on the lad’s “musical education." A limited field for local talent was a stiff proposition to be faced. The church orchestra and perhaps the town band were the only opportunities for practice. RALPH E. NORRIS DEAD Nickel Plate road officials today received word of the death of Ralph E. Norris, 55, assistant general freight agent, Sunday at his home. Lakewood, Ohio. Norris lived here a number of years. He started his railroad career as a messenger boy for the Lake Erie & Western Railroad. The widow and his father survive.
