GOOD INCREASE IN HANDLING OF MAIL IS MADE 'Fifteen Per Cent More Than Last Year Cared For. Postoffice employes handled 15 per cent more Christmas mail this year than last. 3%e announcement was made today by Kobert H. Bryson, postmaster, at the close of the distribution of Christmas mail. Through the efforts of Bryson, all mall carriers were given a holiday today, the first general holiday ever enjoyed by the postofflca employes on Christmas. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, more than 1,000,000 pieces of mail passed through the postoffice dally. "I am highly elated over the results of the ‘mail early’ campaign this year,’* Bryson said. “Never before has the public responded so enthusiastically to the appeal of the postoffice. Earlier Campaign "Anticipating a larger mailing year than in years previous, the department began its campaign for Christ- , mas mailing earlier. “The fact that we opened about 90,000 square feet of floor space in the parcel post station at Illinois and South Sts., and handled all parcel post mail through this branch, aided In keeping the main postofflce clear. "About 400 additional clerks and carriers were employed, beginning Dec. 18. Because a great number of these carriers and clerks were experienced civil service men, the mall Was handled with ease.” Open on Sunday Bryson said the opening of the main postofflce and all classified substations last Sunday afternoon for five hours was an asset In delivering the mail. “Many persons who did their shopping on Saturday and had the packages wrapped Sunday were glad of the opportunity of getting them out of the way,” he stated. “Another feature which made the service this year more efficient was placing weighing and wrapping tables on the first floor of the Federal Bldg. This saved a great deal of time and we were able ot take care of mail until the closing hours.” SHRINE WILL GIVE PARTIES , FOR HOLIDAYS Social Season Will Open Monday—Children to Be Entertained. STATE DANKERS PLAN LAW FOR CRIME BUREAU Editorial Says Prosecution of Criminals Sorely Handicapped. A bill creating a criminal bureau of investigation and identification, to aid in prosecution of criminals, will be introduced in the next Legislature by bankers It was indicated today. Finger prints and records of all criminals would be kept. An editorial in The Hoosier Banker, official Indiana Bankers Association magazine edited by Miss Forba McDaniel, urged establishment of the bureau. “Owing to changing conditions, even in the criminal world, Indiana sorely needs a bureau of criminal investigation and identification,” the editorial said. Practice of defense attorneys arousing sympathy of jurors by “shaking the gory locks about prosecution of a poor man by a rich bankers organization,” was scored. “The criminal of today recognizes no law except that of expediency, while at the same time he is the first to cry out for every protective measure that will help him when he has been caught in a violation of the law. The State, on the other hand, must give him all these safeguards, and as a result criminals often evade Justice,” it said in part. "Creation of such a bureau will be the first step towards strengthening the hands of the State in its fight on crime.” A. G. Brown of Greencastle, protective chairmnn, is doing research work necessary for proper drafting of a preliminary bill. He has studied the system in other States where it is said to have reduced crime. HUMANE LAWS The enforcement of laws regarding humane treatment of livestock, especially during transportation, has done a great deal towards eliminating unnecessary rough and cruel treatment of the animals.
