Looney guilty, JURYDECIDES publisher Convicted of Slaying Man. . SBi/ United Press f GALESBURG, 111., Dec. 28.—John fel. Looney, alleged vice lord of Rock Island, was found guilty of the murder of William Gabel, former [Rock Island saloon keeper. The verdict provided for a penalty fr>f fourteen years in prison. Looney has been the object of jlcourt attacks for a number of years, the State contending that he was for many crimes in the (territory around Rock Island, Moiline. 111., and Davenport, lowa. As alleged lord of vice and gamibling in Rock Island’s underworld and through the pages of his obiscure weekly newspaper, Looney was accused of collecting duty from many citizens whom h e entrapped ;or claimed to have entrapped in questionable transactions. His I newspaper, the prosecution has .always contended, was merely a ! means for blackmail. % CHILLY AT THE BRIDGES Mayor Says Future Dedications Will Be Held in Summer. ‘All bridge dedicating of the future Will be held in the good old summer time.” Mayor Shank made this statement today. He said it was occasioned by his attempt to dedicate the Oliver 1 Ave. and Kentucky Ave. bridges over ' White River Tuesday when common sense forestalled oratory in the chilling breezes. But the Police and Firemen’s Band braved the winter, marching across the bridges, followed by twenty-five vehicles. v The Kentucky Ave. bridge cost $649,228.10 and the Oliver Ave. structure $504,884.12. Shelton escaped with minor injuries.

THREE CHILDREN DIE JMJANIC Christmas Party Guests Stampede After Crash. Bv-Times Special ERIE. Pa., Dec. 22.—Erie’s holiday cheer was saddened today by the death of uhree little children, trampled to death as a Christmas party for 3,000 children became a madhouse of terror. Police and firemen had started clearing congested aisles at an arena where the party was progressing. As the police charged jip the aisle, a bench broke with a loud crash, and hundreds of children made for the exits. A hundred adults were unable to stem their struggle toward the doors. IMPROVEMENT IS SLIGHT Slight improvement was noted today in the dßnditlons of Robert MeCardie, 1655 Park Ave.; Miss Dorothy Woodstock, 2541 Shelby St. and Miss Catherine Forte, 1103 E. Washington St., in city hospital, suffering from injuries received early Friday when thef auto in which they were riding with Norman Barthel crashed into a street car at Ohio and Illinois Sts. Barthel was killed. Miss Woodstock and McCardle are conscious while Miss Forte is I conscious at intervals.
