WEEKLY BOOK REVIEW Kin Allows There Be Several Drawbacks to Old Age
By Walter D. Hickman [£, URE enough, a man does have , ) a tough time if it when old age creeps upon him. And there are lot of drawbacks when a feller gets old .aocordlng to Abe Martin In his daddy's new book of wisdom, called “Things In General.” Abe's “papa,” you know, is Kin Hubbard of Indianapolis. Rather come to think of it, when you say Abe Martin you really mean Kin Hubbard. But cornin’ back to the drawbacks of old age, Abe allows in “Things in General” that “Th’ drawback t’ gittin’ ole is that we’ro our pipe, or teeth, or spectacles, an’ too often, we ferglt our age.” Every time anew Kin Hubbard Abe Martin edition of goodly and pert observation on things in general comes off the press, I have the feelin’ that I wish I had only an oldfashioned fireplace In my fiat Instead of steam heat. A feller sorta can’t get back to the beginnln’ of things unless he has had an old-fashioned fireside experience. Steam heat be comfortable, but It Is too goll darned modern when you have a book on human philosophy In your hand. The old-fashioned fireplace has rone and so has the family horse and the old surrey, but thank goodness we have the old-fashioned heart to heat philosophy of Kin Hubbard. Some Reasons In this day of the sheik drama and sex literature by the garbage can schbol of writers, it Is a pleasuse to run up against such a character as Abe Martin. A feller gets goln’ so fast now days that he must put on the mental brakes sometime. And one of the best ways I know of gettln’ back to mental sunshine and thought is to Invite Abe Martin to come to your house, Abe goes a visitin' every day in the year, and then ever once and a while he puts on a yaller Jacket and comes trooping around about Christmas time. And Abe has this to say regardin' foreign visitors: “Os all th’ visitors that come t’ this country from abroad we believe we like th’ vaudeville acrobats th’ best.” And on turnin’ the pages you will discover this timely observation: “So many soft Jobs are bein' created these days that ready-made suits come with two pairs o’ trousers.” Growing Fame Kin Hubbard, the daddy of Abe Martin, Is now more than a Hoosler humorist. He is a philosopher for any hour of the day. He talks In big national terms, meaning that he doesn’t bound his territory of thinkin’ jest by In-
diana, but he reaches out and takes in the whole country. In other words, Abe Martin talks the language that is understood on every main street, and I have been thinking that the man such as Kin Hubbard, who can capture every main street, is a much bigger man than a Broadway star. Am trying to say that in my humble opinion, Kin Hubbard alias Abe Martin, has so stamped his individuality of thought upon the nation that his future monument will
Musical Library In order to establish in the Music Department of the Indianapolis Public Library a collection of anthems for the use of all the churches of the city, and large enough to be of real assistance to them, Charles E. Rush, librarian, has outlined briefly this plan: “If fifty churches will present the Library with thirty copies of some one anthem at an expense of $4 for each church, the Library will undertake to provide an equal number of titles. This will create a collection of one hundred anthems which may be borrowed as easily as any other kind of printed matter by any church in the city. Our endeavor will be to build up a collection which will be of the highest usefulness to all denominations and which will make accessible to church choirs a wider range of music for public presentation than is now the case.”
