SCHOOL BOARD PREPARES TO BATTLE ORDER Members Will Seek'to Prove Allegations False at Hearing. Indianapolis school board members, named in a temporary restraining order granted in Superior Court Four, to Kay K. Wark, building contractor. preventing them from executing contracts with architects for six new elementary schools, today prepared to prove allegations against them were false, at a hearing at 9:30 a. m., Thursday before Judge Clinton H. Glvan. Joseph Daniels, board attorney said the board will fight for its rights and ask the court that the temporary restraining order be dissolved and that no temporary injunction be issued. The complaint against the board alleges that the selection of architects for the buildings was not done legally and that money for the architects’ services is not avaiiiDle, except through taxation. Erection of the six new grade school buildings was one of the main features of the school board's program for 1925-26. Board members believed that with the completion of these structures the crowded condi tions which have ben combated for the last few years would be remedied.

“This will make the folks at the Marion County Infirmary happy,” remarked Mrs. Otto S. Mueller, chairman of a committee of the All Souls Unitarian Church, which has taken the inmates of that home under their wing. The women of the committee were busy all one day wrapping Christmas packages for the 230 men and the seventy-three women in the infirmary. The men’s packages contained candy and tobacco and the boxes for the women had some of the little personal possessions dear to the heart of women, wherever their residence.

| ERHAPS you have seen city j p tinmen dragging their hose I * to a v burning building. It is filled with water almost to the bursting point, but the nozzle is turned off. One man can hold it easily. But as soon as the nozzle is opened and the big stream started to spurt, the hose straightens and jumps like a giant snake. Two or three men have all they can do to keep its nose turned on the blaze. That sudden power, which conies from the release of a fluid under pressure, Is tho same kind of power which Is used in turbine engines, whether they be water turbines, steam turbines, or air turbines. It depends upon the momentum attained by the water or the steam. Now if you wished to use the power developed by the firemen’s hose, there are evidently two ways of doing it. You could set up a wheel with vanes or wings on its rim. and direct the full force of the nozzle as it came out of the narrow nozzle against these vanes, and the wheel would spin at great speed. This would be an example of the simplest form of turbine, called the “velocity" or "Impulse” turbine. On the other hand, imagine a number of wheels inside the hose, all of them attached to a suitable shaft, and arranged so that tho flowing water would strike them, one after the other, before it reached the nozzle. The stream through the hose would be slowed down, of course, and these wheels would not turn so fast as the one described above, which receives all at once the full force of the stream, hut they would deliver a steadier and equally powerful motion. This would be an example of the “pressure” or “reaction” turbine. There are, of course, rnanay ways of applying these two fundamental systems, but the accompanying picture shows the essential parts of the simpler forms of water and steam turbine engines. Steam under ordinary boiler pressure has one great advantage over water —it expands in volume with tremendous velocity, often as much as 4,000 feet per second. No wheel made can revolve at anywhere near this speed, but various devices are used to “tame down” the steam, such as distributing the flow through several turbine wheels in succession. The Curtis type of steam turbine uses the "impulse”

'system, while the rarsons type is built on the “reaction” plan. Water turbine are of immense value where a swift and plentiful supply of water is available. They are used for generating electricity, in pumping water for irrigation, etc. Some of the largest hydroelectric plants in tho world are situated tit Niagara Falls, where the vast flow is harnessed to more than a score of mammoth turbines. In the high Sierra Mountains in California where streams of water can be dammed so as to get high water pressure, impact turbines are largely used; while at Keokuk on the Mississippi, where there is an enormous volume of water under much lower pressures, the ‘pressure" or "reaction” turbines are used. Steam turbines are particularly useful for driving machinery at high speed, avoiding all the jar and loss of power involved in the ordinary "reciprocating” steam engine, lie sides driving dynamos by direct connection, they are used with great success on swift ocean vessels, such as naval destroyers and some ocean liners. The ill-fated Lusitania—sunk by a German submarine in 1915—was a fine example at a turtdne ship.
