HIGHER PRICES MARKET’S GIFT FOR CHRISTMAS Approaching Holiday Adds Impetus to Increases. \ Tho approaching holidays added impetus to the rising prices todav at the city market. Mariy fruits and vegetables were up and prediction? are for further jumps. Artichokes were higher at 25 cents ea*h; peas sold for 39 cents a pound; red grapes were in demand at 25 cents a pound; pineapples jumped to 50 cents each; cranberries rose to 30 cents a pound. Spanish ,n;:lna grapes were new and quats were up to 35 cents a box; and grapefruit were 10 cents each and 2 for 25 cents. Chickens were on the upswing and many stands had fowls at 42 and 45 cents a pound. Eggs were cheaper and sold from 50 to 55 cents a dozen. Ducks were unchanged at 40 and 45 cents a pound; turkeys, 60 and 70 cents a pound; geese, 40 cents a pound. Celery sold at 10 cents a bunch; head lettuce, 20 cents each; California tomatoes, 35 cents a pound; home-grown tomatoes, 45 cents a pound; tangerines, 50 cents a dozen and brussels sprouts, 25 cents a box. Idaho potatoes were selling at four pounds for 25 cents, while sweet potatoes brought 10 cents a pound. Christmas trees were scarce at 75 cents and up and many of the standholders predicted an acute shortage. Loose Wholly was practically all sold and the wreaths were priced at 25 cents. All Christmas trees are shipped to Indianapolis from Maine and the usual quota of the city hds ’ been curtailed. This probably will cause the city market to run about 1,500 trees short for the season, according to the curb merchants. EPIDEMIC OF MEASLES 165 Children 111 at Cloverdale; Other Cases In County. Bn J'nitcd Press GREENCASTLE, Ind., Dec. 22. Health authorities of Putnam County today struggled to check th! epidemic of measles raging in the southern part of the county. The largest number of cases reported is at Cloverdale, where 165 children have been taken ill with the disease.
