All these belong to (lie cabbage family, radishes, kohlrabi, turnips and cauliflower.
rp^- J AULIFLOWER and kale, 1C I Brussels sprouts and Kohli I raid, cabbage and turnips, | radishes, mustards, and watercress — what a big and useful family of plants we have in the cabbage and Its numberous relatives’ Cauliflower, someone has said, is "a cabbage with a ct liege educa tion”; that it is a ci bltage plant which has been carefully cultivated for centuries until it developed a very tight head of delicately flavored "flowers,” delicious to eat either boiled or pickled. Kale is a member ■of the same family which runs to foliage instead of flowers, producing cringled succulent leaves, which we eat as greens or feed to cattle. In Brussels sprouts (so named because it was cultivated long ago near Brussels, in Belgium) we have a plant that bears a number of delicate leaf-buds an Inch or so in diameter along the length of its tall thick stalk. Kohlrabi, on the other hand, is a veriety that took to storing up nourishment In Its thickened stem, until the stem became a turnlp-llke globe that sits on the top of the ground, and makes a very good food for both human beings and cattle. Another extraordinary member of the family put its vigor into the stem by shooling as tall as possible, instead of swelling out like the. kohlrabi. This Is the Jersey cabbage, or tree cabbage, that grows eight or tert high in the Channel Islands,' and has a stout stem that Is used for walking sticks and rafters in cottages; its leaves do not close into heads, but are used as fodder for cattle. In the cabbage proper we have a decendant of the wild cabbage that puts its strength only into the terminal leaf-bud. which forms the swollen compact head we so often eat raw, boiled, or pickled with salt in the form of sauerkraut. Cultivation lias developed more than 100 types of cabbage—smooth-leaved and wrinkle-leaved (also called Savoy): green and red; with heads conical^ PREMIER fiIVES ‘EMPIRE’ PLANS (Continued From Page I) organisms. Every nation which possesses the exuberant capacity for progress is forced by its own nature, as its productive powers grow stronger, to widen the limit of its own pacific penetration in the world and to expand its power, its intellectual and moral prestige beyond its frontiers. Quotes Roosevelt “Does not the history of the United States afTord us a typical example of this movement of pacific expansion? Has not an American imperialism been spoken of in the same way that reference is made to Italian imperialism? There is no need for me to remind you, an American, of the ideas and works of Roosevelt, who only a few months before his death, wrote ‘every people must, abdve all, make use of its particular energies and must safeguard its own honor and its own vital interests." "When one speaks of an ‘imperial’ Italy, no definite territorial conquest is alluded to but rather an attitude of mind, the rule of virile conduct, combative, if needs be, which Italy must observe in great International problems. Italy Has Means "Italy’s importance among the nations of the world, her great sacrifices during the World War, and her exurberant population all give her the right to wider expansion. “He who sees an aggressive aim in such policy is a fool. “History is not without examples of peaceful agreements and partitionings through which powers arrived at a firmer and more Just equilibrium of their forces and safeguarded the peace tranquility of their peoples. “I am confident that Italy will not lack the means, when the occasion arises, of obtaining through compromises and agreements the portion due her. America Praised, “Other nations would assume a grave responsibility in raising any obstinate resistance to Italy’s moderate aspirations which are only directed to guaranteeing her future as a great power.” Os the Italian debt settlement in Washington, Moussilini declared his confidence that it “will stimulate Italy’s young energies rather than weaken her.” Os America, he had words of nraise v t “America " Jil said “stives every* m&msm
.oblong, round or fiat. Scientists tell us that cabbages yield a greater weight of green food to the acre than any plant, and that there is no better fodder for cattle and sheep. Y’ou can tell that all these descendants of the wild mustard plant, both by the resemblance of the flowers and by the biting mus-tard-like flavor that their stems have to a greater or less degree. The young mustard plants are sometimes eaten as salad, but thy are chiefly cultivated for their white or black seeds, which are ground t omake out familiar powdered mustard. Radishes also are near cousins of the mustard, with the hot biting tasle usually well developed. Their globular or elongated roots are delicious a relishes or in salads, and in Europe the young leaves and the seed pods are also eaten. Watercres and other kinds of cress, which are among our popular salad materials, also betray their inembershjp in t? e mustard family by their flavor. The horseradish, with its tear-bringing taste, is a coarser relative to the radish and the watercress. Its white fibrous root is grated and steeped In vinegar with salt, and sugar to make the rondiment often eaten with meats; it is often mixed with grated turnip root to make It milder. The same mustardy taste Is conspicuous in the turnip before it is boiled. The turnip is one of our most valuable root crops for both human and animal food, even though It Is nine-tenths water. The tender tops of early spring turnlpe are also good boile das greens. Several varieties have been developed, distinguished by their color, size and shape. The Rutabaga or Swedish turnip is the large yellow variety grown in northern latitudes. Tho garden variety grown for human food are generally small er, tenderer and more delicately fla vored than the field turnips, grown chiefly for cattle feed, which sometimes attain a size of twenty to twenty-five pounds. day an example of this ardent, untamed youthful urge to work, to produce wealth and to spread it far and wide for the. fecundity of the world." Explains Fascism Asked whether lie proposed an abandonment of the representative and parliamentary principles. Mussolini replied that Fascisism does not “propose complete abandonment, but rather a thorough transforma tlon of the parliamentary system, which, without any doubt, Is in a state of obvious decadence in all countries which had followed it.” In this connection, he pointed out that economic and social conditions have altered and that the old parliamentarylsm no longer is adapted to the new conditions. He foresaw anew era In relations between capital and labor as a result of Italy’s compulsory arbitration laws and its insistence that Fascist! organizations handle all labor-capital disputes. Touching on the submarine question, he clearly indicated his opposition to abandonment of this weapon which, he suggested, was available to smaller nations who were not in a position to comtete with great nations in building of major craft. Referring to the conclusion of the Locarno pacts he observed that it was In his opinion “highly desirable that the Locarno pact should )o supplemented by other particular agreements of friendship and arbitration between the various European powers.” LEWIS’ JOB IS MADESECURE Coolidge Puts Southern Democrat on I. G.O.P. OPPOSES COOLIDGE PLAN So President Puts His Trust in Democrats. Uu United Prees WASHINGTON, Dec. 21. WW Senator Borah and other Republicans preaching revolt against the Republican World Court platform plank. President Coolidge has been placed in the anomalous position of depending on the Democrats to carry the Harding-Hughes-Coolidge court proposal. Through Col. E. M. House, advisor of Woodrow Wilson, had departed today after his unheralded visit to the President, political observers expect It to result In an attempted Coolldge-Democratic entente on foreign matters. In the matters of-ratifying foreign debt settlements aiid participation in the League of Nations disarmament efforts as in the world court' adherence, the chief opposition is from the President’s own party. Senator Swanson, ranking Democrat of the foreign Relations Committee and Senator Walsh of Montana, another , Democrat, have carried the burden so far in an effort to block the spread of Borah's court opposition.
