NICKEL TAKES PERSHING WORD TO PRESIDENT United Press Official Visits Coolidge at White House. Bn United Press WASHINGTON, Dec. 18—Karl A. TSickel, president of the United Press Associations, vfsited President CoolIdge at the White House Thursday. The Tacna-Arica situation was discussed among other foreign matters, and Bickel, who Just returned from a. trip to South America, conveyed to the President personal greetings from General Pershing, in charge of American adjudication of the dispute at Arica. The President expressed keen interest in the news relations between the northern and southern continents and saw in the increasing news requirements of South America a faV-i orable omen for future relations and understanding between the two peoples. Bickel was later a guest at a luncheon given by the Pan-American Union to the new Cuban ambassador, Rafel Sanchez-Aballi. The trip to South America, from which Bickel has just returned, was in the interest of the United Press Association, which is received by 90 per cent of the newspapers taking a press report in South America. He arranged for an extension of service in all of the countries. The bureaus of the United Press in Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aire3, Santiago and Lima were enlarged in personnel jn order to care for the increasing number of papers being served in South America, well as to Improve the service to North American newspapers from the southern continent. While in South America, Bickel interviewed the presidents of Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru and conferred witn Gen. John J. Pershing, chairman of the Tacna-Arica plebiscitary commission at Arica, as well as the Chilean and Peruvian delegates to the plebiscitary commission.
