UPDIKE WILL L TAKE REQUEST I TO PRESIDENT ■bolidge to Be Asked to Or- ® der Postmastership Examination. Timet Washington Bureau. Hit New York Avenue. WASHINGTON, Dec. 16.—Representative Ralph E. Updike of Indianapolis, “late this week" will appeal to President Coolidge personally to order United State Civil Service examination for the position of Indianapolis postmaster, unless it is ordered between now and then, as requested, he said today. Updike declared that the hesitation of the civil service commission to hold the examination was “without precedent.” So far as he has checked up, the request for such an examination is invariably honored,

RETRIAL IS ORDERED Terr® Haute Youth, Sentenced to Die, Gets New Chance. State Supreme Court today ordered the Clay Circuit Court to retry Edward Barber, 18, of Terre Haute, convicted of the murder of Stephen Kendall, a Terre Haute detective, and who was to have been electrocuted Feb. 19. The higher court recently reversed the conviction of Joe Parker, alleged accomplice. he said. In the Indianapolis district the postoffice appointment has always been considered congressional patronage, he added. He explained that the commission on receiving his original request a month ago took the unusual course of referring it to Postmaster General New, Indianapolis Republican leader. New, who is In favor of Robert Bryson’s continuance In the position, Updike said, requested a conference with Updike which was held late last week. Got No Satisfaction At this conference Updike renewed his request for an examination. He
explained to New, he said, that he was neither for or against Bryson, but wanted to protect his freedom of choice. "I told him it looked to me as If he wanted to ignore the protests of 500 or 600 of my constituents against Bryson in favor of an almost exactly equal number who wrote urging Bryson’s reappointment.” he said, “New admitted in effect that he wanted exactly that.” Updike got no satisfaction from New as to whether the latter would approve the request for an examination, he said. In Fighting Mood “New’s position Is the more singular, because four years ago as Senator from Indiana he ruled that the postoffice appointment was congressional patronage and kept hands off,” said Updike. Updike is clearly in a fighting mood, and it is predicted he will stir up a rumpus In Indianapolis Republican circles which will take some time to die down, If his request Is not granted. Bryson is in the faction of the party which opposed Updike before the primary, eighteen months ago. His term expires Jan. 18. BABY GIRL IS FOUND Infant Deserted in South Bend Railroad Station. The work of the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) in developing cracking processes is outstanding among the many contributions it has made to the consumer of gasoline. The importance of these processes is emphasized when it is known that they have increased the yield of gasoline, from a given amount of crude, by more than 50%. During the past few years the consumption of gasoline has increased as follows: Gasoline Cars Consumed Registered 1922 5.3 Billion Gals. 12.2 Million 1923 6.6 “ “ 15.0 “ 1924 7.7 a “ 17.5 * Statistics for 1924 show that crude production amounted to 40.7 barrels per registered car, as against 47 barrels per registered car for 1923, whereas, for comparative purposes, we point out that, in 1913 the production per registered car was 194 barrels. Despite the overflowing wells in the Southwest and particularly in California, during the past few years, the supply of gasoline would not have kept pace with the automobile manufacturers’ production, had it not been for the advanced work done by the Standard Oil Company (Indiana) in developing cracking processes which stretched the available supply of crude oil to meet the demand for gasoline. This Company did not keep its cracking processes for its exclusive use, but leased them on an equitable basis to other refiners that they also might do their part in keeping the supply of gasoline equal to the demand. To have kept its cracking processes to itself would have meant huge profits to the Standard Oil Company (Indiana), but it chose rather to pass on these benefits to the consuming public. The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) combines expert business management with maximum technical skill. This Company’s technicians protect the quality of its oils and gasoline and assure you of an abundant supply at fair prices. Expert business management stops losses and reduces expenses —while its supreme efficiency puts gasoline and oils easily within the reach of every motorist of the Middle West. SANTA BUILDS TOYS HERE, NOT AT NORTH POLE Workshop at People’s Outfitting Company Is Lively Place. One of the liveliest places in town these days is Santa Claus’ work shop at the People’s Outfitting Company. Os course Santa Is making toys there! A forge sends out jolly little flames In one corner, and Santa himself at an einory wheel sends sparks flying that delight the youngsters. “Make me something, Santa,” the youngsters exclaim, and Santa nods and works away industriously. Another point of great interest at this holiday season is the complete little automobile shop, where toy autos that have real horns and for sure automobile parts, replicas of the big machines, have a department of their own. In the basement there are more toys, in fact the toy department of the People’s Outfitting Company is one of the largest In the State and the variety here is bewildering. “I never dreamed that this store was so large—why, they have a wonderful stock,” a woman shopper from out of town exclaimed, and she was right. On the first floor beside the departments named there is tasteful furniture of late design, beside a jewelry shop with a large stock of silverware and clocks. On another floor there are pianos of standard make and the new orthophonic consolette, which Is proving a popular Christmas seller. The living room furniture floor has been attracting especial attention these days, as it has been enhanced with a striking display of floor and bridge lamps which send light through hundreds of beautiful silken shades.

Stepping Into a true Colonial center hall, from which winds a graceful mahogany staircase, one views the long living room, through an arched door to the right. Here is a wide brick fire-place with handsome side-light fixtures. The walls are a soft gray tapestried effect. To the left of the hallway is the attractive dining room with Its French door which leads into an unusual breakfast room—not a nook—with a striking forestry wall paper and crystal center light fixtures.
