Dorothy Byton and Steppers Do Charleston Dance on Their Toes
By Walter IX Hickman E 1"”””! VfiN the Charleston yields to the touch of the classically v. trained dancer. That is proven because Dorothy Byton and her six dancers dance this new dance on their toes. The toe arrangement rather elevates this dance, but it is the Charleston just the same. Want to linger a few minutes with Miss Byton and her dancers? Here Is a dancing act composed of six dancers and a principal dancer. The act has been so cleverly arranged that this small group of dancers Is able to present a sort of an Oriental ballet, beautifully gowned, without any stage waits. To the strains of Oriental music these dancers, execute the slow movements of the ballet as gracefully anct with as much charm as one demands with a grand opera ballet. The person who planned this dancing act has turned out the real limited thing known as fine dancing acts. Miss Byton and her assisting artists do not sacrifice their classical training for cheapness. They bring grace and beauty to every mood of the dance. Here is a dancing act that lends charm and class to any variety bill. A1 White is present with a voice not so great, but he has that way of dressing up his numbers so they get across. He has the aid of another singer. White runs mostly to comedy instead of genuine melody. A troupe of trained monkeys appear under the headline of Rneresto’s Cirhus, but the human trainer never appears. The monkeys go through their routine, doing an entire vaudeville show. The monkeys even go in for music as they have their own monkey orchestra. Act is. interesting as a novelty. Louise and Mitchell are all right as long as they stick to their acrobatic work. Very few pcof .e can successfully mix acrnbotjev iirfi
