For weak, frail, under-developed children—and especially those that have rickets, and need a sure builder that promotes the growth of teeth and bones, cod liver oil is the one medicine supreme—nothing helps like it. Hut it is nasty and repulsive, and evil smelling and nearly always upsets children’s stomachs —so now, up-to-date chemists advise McCoy’s Cod Liver Oil Compound Tablets. Children love them as they do candy, because they are sugar coated and easy to take. One boy gained WVi pounds in seven weeks, and is now healthy and happy—thousands of other children have grown strong and robust. Sixty tablets for CO cents at Hook, Haag, Goldsmith Bros, and all druggists—but be sure and ask for McCoy's—the original aDd genuine. Give them to the sickly, frail child for 30 days and if they don't help—wonderfully, your druggist is authorized to hand you back the money you paid for them. —Advertisement. The Tangle LETTER FROM SALLY ATHERTON TO LESLIE PRESCOTT —CONTINUED “Why should you be afraid, Paula?” I asked. "Surely you must know that you have money enough to bring up a child In any luxury you might wish.” “Oh, yes,” she answered somewhat wearily, “I’ve gone all over that to myself. But, Sally, what If I still would have this insatiable desire for a child of my very own? What if I came to look upon the one that I had adopted as something that was standing between me and what was my inalienable right as a woman and a mother? What if I never looked upon the face of the child whom I had pledged not only myself but posterity to love and care for, without wishing that in its place was one that was in reality my own? What if I could never get over the idea that between the babe In my arms and myself there was no call of the blood, no ties of the flesh?” I tried to talk her out of this, Leslie. I tried to make her see how foolish it was and cited to her that you had adopted little Jack, as she knew. “Are you sure, Sally?” Paula asked solemnly, “that Madame Leslie does not feel sorry now that she adopted him? Does she not feel very differently toward her adopted son than she does toward this one which Is none of her bone and flesh of her flesh?” “Leslie has told me many times,” I answered, “that she has the same feeling toward each of her children and if there Is any difference between them, she thought perhaps she was more devoted to little Jack than to Sydney.” Then, Leslie, I told her how all your friends wished you would have a girl when you were going to have a baby, so you would not have to contrast your real mother love which, of course, would be for your own child with the probably very different feeling that was yours for your adopted son. I told her, Leslie, how many times you had resented this prevalent opinion of your friends to me and how you were very glad that your own child was a boy, because, as you had always told me since it was bom, you did not know any difference between the two of them, except that if possible, you loved little Jack bet-

ter than you did Sydney, because he had been with you longer. Much to my surprise, Paula kissed the leeping eyelids of the baby In her arms, and the tears ran down her cheeks and fell upon his unconscious, up-turned face. There was a most peculiar |ook upon her countenance. I could not fathom it. I went back again to that feeling that I had when I'd first seen her, that there is something in Paula Perier’B life that had changed her whole character end It was something I probably would never know. (Copyright, 1926, NEA Service, Inc.) NEXT—Letter from Sally Atherton to Leslie Prescott—Continued. SCARLET FEVER AT IT Increase in Cases Over State Reported for Week. SCHOOL BOARD HEW MEMBERS MAYGETBIDS Old Group Not to Have Much More Say About Shortridge. New members of the Indianapolis school board probably will have the opportnuity to carry on the board's building program, it was indicated today, when no moves were made to remedy the split which occurred at a special board meeting Saturday. The new members are Charles W. Kern, Theodore Vonnegut, and Mrs. Lillian Sedwick. They do not know whether they take office Jan. 1 or the second Tuesday of January. They take office as soon as they meet after Jan. 1. If they take office before Jan. 6, the present board will not have an opportunity to receive the bids on Shortridge High School or on the $1,200,000 bond Issue. If they wait until the serond Tuesday the present board may be able to receive both sets of bids, provided the dates are definitely set at the meeting Tuesday night. The split Saturday occurred when Adolph G. Emhardt objected to receiving bids until the plans and specifications for the new building were received and approved by the board. Business Director William H. Book will ask the board to set. a date for advertising the bids at the meeting Tuesday. This was to have been done today, but when the board could not agree on dates for receiving bids, it was postponed. The amount to be spent on Shortridge will be decided by the State tax board, which Saturday heard the remonstrance against the bond issue, filed by the Indiana Taxpayers’ Association. ■ ■ Martha Lee Says —— TO LIVE, TO SUFFER TO LEARN—TO GROW
“I wish I were a moron!’’ said a young girl desperately not long ago. “I’m tired of thinking and aching, and aching and thinking. I wish I couldn’t think ! M
But she does not wish this. She would not give up her puzzling, thrilling emotions for all the peace in the world. She would not want the kind of a heart that does not pulse to inspiration, that does not leap to happiness, ncs sink to despair from which to rise again. She is suffering those intense growing pains, that will bring her to maturity, a with a rich, full life. Love, success, popularity, all take their toll. Each commodity comes high in the price of experience. A cynic once said there were two ways of punishing us, one by denying what we wanted —the other by granting us what we wanted. But who wants a soft life, untouched by pathos, unwashed by tears, shut off from the glory of impulse, hidden away from moments of dazzling happiness? I don’t, do you? ' Skeptic Dear Mi*** Lee: What’* the use ofanything’ any more? When you were 10 nia you think and think ana not get anywhere? It seems like the more I try to figure out this mortal existence the more puzzled I get. Why do people treat people they love so mean? There must be some reason why the young man I go with tells me he love* me one minute and is mean to me the next. I have told him to not come to see me any more. But it seems that isn’t what 1 wain either. Is anybody ever satisfied? pBRpIJntED Would you like to be incapable of feeling, of thrilling, of thinking? I think not. For. after all, these are the things that take us out of the rut of our existence, and bring us moments, though brief, of complete happiness and satisfaction. But no one of your temperament is ever satisfied for long. And I guess that is just as well, or we would never be perfecting our modes of living. You seem to be developing a philosophy of sorts, that will undoubtedly serve to amuse you and take care of you in moments of bitterness.

Home Is a House Dear Martha Lee: I am a irirl 18 years of age and have been married three years and have no children. I love them, but my husband does not want any children. Please advise me how to (ret him to want and love thorn. I think the world of my husband, but he does not show any affection toward me. Please advise me how to get him to love me. HEART BROKEN WIFE. Can’t you interest your husband as thrillingly as you did before you were married? A woman must keep herself something of an interesting lure to her husband. A bit of a mystery, even prehaps a trifle given to moods. It's harder for a woman with children to look after to carry on this kind of defensive warfare, so you ought not to be much handicapped. As for children, I think you should have them If you want them. Perhaps you can keep some small, darling child for a relative or neighbor some evening, and interest your husband in it. It might be just your luck to have the little dickens act like Sam Patch, and spoil your plans, and then again it might not. It's worth a try.
