BUOYANT TONE MAINTAINED BY STOCK MARKET / Profit-Taking Absorbed in Very Impressive Manner. Stock Prices Average price of twenty industrial stocks for Saturday was 154.80. up .80. Average price of twenty rails for Saturday was 107.82, up .62. Bu United Press NEW YORK, Dec. s.—Stocks maintained a generally buoyant tone in the week-end session. Profit faking by traders desiring to be out of the market over the week-end was absorbed in an impressive manner and operations for the rise went ahead consistently with Pennsylvania, New York Central, Atchison, Frisco, St. Louis-Southwestern and other railroad favorites in urgent demand. strength of the rails reflected the construction of a "consolidated market” for which Wall Street has been looking forward to for many months. In his message to Congress, President Coolidge will probably adhere to the spirit of his previous declaration of expediting consolidation progress perhaps with more emphasis now that the Interstate Commerce Commission has outlined to congressional leaders its ideas for short and simple legislation to open the dpor to rapid unification. Local Bank Clearings —Dec. 6 Indianapolis bank clearings for today amounted to $3 874.000. Clearings for the week were 520.849.000. Bank debits for today totaled $5,966,00. Bu United Press CHICAGO, Dec. 5. G pains finished higher on the Board of Trade today, wheat leading in strength. A last minute spurt of short covering and commission house buying took wheat out of its depression. The greater part of the session was given over to profit taking. Numerous rallies occurred, but they failed to hold save the last one. Commission houses and shorts were behind the buying. Corn held firmly at the top of fractional gains scored in early trading. - Oats had one particular strengthening feature in the greatly improved outside demand. Provisions dropped with hogs. In the Sugar Market (By Thomson & McKinnon) NEW YORK, Dec. s.—Liquidation in the sugar market became quite general today following a fairly firm opening, prices for the new crop showing losses of seven to eleven points with support confined almost wholly to the old crop options. Publication of a forecast of the Cuban crop by a leading factor in the trade indicating a record breaking outturn of 5.200.000 tons came )n the nature of a surprise. The trade had been adjusting itself to a cron not to exceed 4.750.000 tons. Unless the European crop shows a muoh greater falling off than preliminary estimates indicate, values will he difficult toe maintain. Raw Sugar Prices Dec. 5 Prev. High. Low. Close. Close. A heavy run of material, estimated at 9,000 and 226 holdovers from the Friday trading period, was too large to be absorbed readily and tfie selling side suffered from the drop. Choice light weight pigs brought the top price of sl2. Matured light stuff commanded the regular top price of $11.90. A few loads brought this quotation in the late trading. The bulk of the transactions for the morning were made from $11.25 to $11.66. • v Hog Price Scale Trading was done- over the following scale of prices: Heaviefc brought $11.25, medium weight hogs averaged [email protected], light stuff was $11.75, light lights sdld at $11.75 @11.85, pigs commanded a price of $11.7G@12, smooth packing sows were quote,l at [email protected], rough packing moved, at $9.50@10, and stags werp $9 @10.60. The cattle market ruled slow to steady In the short trading period. Receipts were estimated at 200. Steers were quoted from $6 to sl2, heifers, [email protected], and cows, [email protected]. Over the past week steers have shown a rise of 50c. Heifers jumped 25c and cows were higher by 25c. An increased vlemand and better quality stuff was probably the reason for the rise in values. Calves Lower Sheep and lamb values held fully steady with prices quoted at the close o£ the previous session. A light run was estimated at 100, and less than half of these were in the open market. Lambs were sold at [email protected]. The top price was placed at sl6, but no material showed quality enough to command this figure. The calf market proved to be' a weak affair, due to the lack of demand. Quotations were off 50c and best veals were sold at sl4. The bulk of the calves were disposed of oA [email protected].
