De Mille Tries His Hand on a New Idea; Jackie Coogan Does Moscow Charleston
Ily Walter D. Hickman. Ei ItODUCERS know by experi | ence that costume movies do i not as a rule register sufli cient results to make it worth while to risk huge sums of money. Cecil B. De Mille became famous as the producer of the bathroom drama. Or rather he became the leader in expo sin g the morning bath in a urns' e!al <>ratifashion on the Bi screen. De Mille S is now making te* his own pictures jo B ami releasing I , *"■: them under ids I . own name. "The ft Road to YesterW' Jnji day” Is an attempt to produce /W a costume romance by using a vvllPHwlltt unique and safe % .|l|i||iJ| method. Tit Is story starts out with the usual Joseph situation —a husSliildkraut band and a wife f failing to understand each other. The wife believes in reincarnation of the soul and when something happens today, she is generally able to remember something that happened to herself in another age. The "yesterday” part of the movie follows a dramatic climax—when the husband and the wife, separated in spirit, are in the same train wreck. By the use of the flashback. De Mille pictures events which happened to the souls of all the characters a century or two ago. This method is unique because the action of the story actually takes place at this time. This metnal or soul flashback stuff is something new on the screen. The production cost lot of monoy because De Mille creates his scenes with an elaborate hand. It still remains to l>e seen if this method of presenting a romantic story meets with general approval. Joseph Schildkraut. Jetta Goudal, Vera Reynolds, William Boyd and Julia Faye head a large cast. The train wreck with one engine crashing its way through a Pullman coach reflects the creative genius of De Mille Here is a love story that is different. De Mille has been brave enough to get away from the beaten paths. The bill includes "The Bone-Head Age,” a news reel, and music by the American Harmonists. At the Colonial all week. -I- •!• -IJACKIE COOGAN NEARS THE DANGEROUS AGE Jackie Coogan is nearing that dangerous age which is so dangerous to the earning ability of boy wonder. This Coogan chap has made several fotrunes and gained national popularity because gan may not be the Jackie Coogan genius in the years to come that he was as a lad. Jackie’s future is not guaranteed by his work in "Old Clothes" which is another attempt to put Jackie in rags while be associates with poverty and hard times. Movie Verdict Apollo—jack Holt goes in for dramatic realism in "The Ancient Highway.” 1 Colonial —Cecil B. De Mille successfully connects romantic costume drama up with the jazz age in "The Road to Yesterday'.” Circle —Two Charleston dancers and an Indian jazz band stops this week’s show here. Ohio —Jackie Coogan attempts to remain cute and just a "kid” in "Old Clothes.”
In “Old Clothes” Jackie is cute and being "cute” he shows the effect of too much theatrical coaching. It seems a shame that Coogan Isn’t given the chance to be a normal bov. He Is called upon to make a love match. Then to coax a proud and haughty society’ mother in giving her consent to the marriage of her son to a girl in the tenement district. The Coogan trousers, the misfit kind that he wears to advantage, are essential to any picture that he appears in. He has been taught many tricks of the acting game. He seems to know them too well. 1 had the feeling that father Coogan was just around the scene telling Jackie just what to do next. ,1 may be all wrong in this, but I do know that Coogan is growing up and that he is making a (fesperate effort to just be a "kid" for several more pictures Coogan does one unique thing—he Introduces the Moscow Charleston in this movies. This is clever but adult. With the Our Gang tribe conquering so easily, Coogan must be careful in selecting his future vehicles. Baby Peggy has “slipped" lately because she attempted to be an "adult baby.” Honest, natural boy life is what the-pul.lic expects Jackie to give the screen. That Is one reason that Our Gang comedies are so well known all over the country. The bill includes on O. Henry story, "Failure” and music by Charlie Davis and his orchestra At the Ohio all week. •I- -I- -ITHE WOULD HAS GONE WILD OVER THE CHARLESTON A man .and a woman dancing the Charleston in its many struggles is the event which Is stopping the Circle’s show this week und also is packing the theater. While an Indian jazz band dishes up hot Charleston music, a man and a woman exhibit this new dance. While I was present it was nearly impossible to start the show after this Indian orchestra and the : ;:$ Charleston stepIpers had completed their turn, a* F'K'lii ;l.e standLT 1 point of the the--1 ater. the f'harles- ■ trm to n “' P (,or JUs entertainment. The Charleston may not have come to,stay, but it is the truth that it is here. The movie feature at the Circle is Anna Q. Nilsson, Ben Lyon, Viola Dana, Hobart Bosworth, Claude Gillingwater and numerous others in "Winds of Chnce." Rex Beach wrote the novel and Frank Lloyd, who made himself famous with “The Sea Hawk,” directed it. The story in movie form does not work toward a gigantic climax, but rather centers its strength ip developing numerous scenes. It hips some deliciously funny scenes and others which are both dramatic and melodramatic . It is filled with scenes of the type that Rex Beach is noted for. 1 noticed that the audience got a lot of enjoyment out of many of the scenes. It is rry personal thought that if it was cut down a reel or two and some of the scenes linked up a little more closely with the central theme, it might have a bigger punch. But it does stack up as interesting entertainmentThe bill includes an Our Gang

comedy, in which some clever trick photography Is used. At the Circle all week. -I- -I’ -IJACK DOLT GOES IN FOR REALISM Few popular male movie stars can withstand the lure of movies which show the rugged life of a lumber camp. Jack Holt, who is at his best when appearing in an out-of-door 'drama. has yielded to the ( |g| lure and has made "The Ancient Highout of place. InJack Holt terest in this plc- • ture really centers upon the scenes devoted to a log jam. Here is a fine bit of realism. Many other movies have had just the same situation, but Holt stages a rescue—the heroine wanted to die with her but the hero saves her —which keeps the acting going in fine style. From a natural scenic standpoint, there is much beauty in “The Ancient Highway.” There is something Inviting about the forest. The director has scattered the romantic and melodramatic element* through the picture in a wise manner. James Oliver Curwood wrote the story. Jftck Holt, especially In the log Jam scene, does some convincing work. The actors must have had a dangerous time in making these scenes. No “doubles” were used as | Billie Dove and Jack Holt battle the logs and the current of the rapids. Bill Includes a Mack Sennett comedy. music by Emil Seidel and his orchestra, songs by Charles B.
