ZONING LAWS GIVEN BLOW New Jersey Decision Threatens Other Statutes. * 8v Timet BvtciaX WASHINGTON, Nov. 20.—Zoning laws in every State are threatened by a decision just handed down by the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals, court of last resort in that State. The court ruled that so long as a person does not erect a building which is manifestly a public nuisance or a menace to the health and safety of the public, he may build hny sort of structure he desires. The purchase of property and erection of a building on it do not give the purchaser the right to say what kind of structures some future purchaser must put on a nearby site, the opinion s^id. The decision raises a doubt as to What will happen to zoning laws if the question ever reaches the United States Supreme Court. Llewellyn Park in West Orange, N. J., the exclusive residence district Where Thomas Edison lives, is threatened with a subdivision of cheap houses. Garages are being established opposite Newark churches and their owners are defying authorities to dislodge them.
