DEMOCRATS TO MEET THURSDAY Battle to Halt Klan Control Is Seen. The Democratic State organization has entered the battle to prevent KuKlux Klan mastery of the party mechanism, it was indicated today. State Chairman Walter S. Chambers called a special meeting of influential leaders from all counties at 10:30 a. m. Thursday at the Claypool to discuss nominations for two United States Senators and thirteen Congressmen. OIL CONTRACTS GIVEN State Highway Commission Buys of Two Companies. The State highway commission Monday awarded a contract for 2,230.000 gallons of gasoline and 20,000 gallons of kerosene for the maintenance division to the Standard Oil Company of Indiana at $16,725 below the price paid last year. The commission also awarded a contract for 149,000 gallons of lubricating oil, 1,500 gallons of machine oil, 250 gallons of cylinder oil and 140,000 pounds of transmission grease to the Denham Oil Company, Indianapolis at a figure $9,800 over that of last year. WATSON TO ENTERTAIN District Workers Will Be Guests of Senator at Dinner. Men and women district chairman of the organization to renominate Senator James E. Watson will be guests of Watson, M. Bed Thurman, collector of Internal revenue and Mrs. Vivian T. Wheatcraft, women’s director, at dinner at the Columbia Club tonight. The organization Is to function if Watson Is opposed in the primary. Miss Eleanor Barker, Indianapolis, is Seventh district women's organizer, while the men's director Is not appointed. Ordinances Introduced and referred to committees at Monday night’s session of city council were: $10,574.94 for payment of a 25 per cent reduction In an assessment against the Union Trust Company, trustee, and others for a sewer In Llnwood Ava., between Tenth St. and Nowland Ave., based on a court judgment, and SIO,OOO for the electric, gas and vapor light fund. An ordinance authorizing $4,200 for legal publication of the new building code in The Indianapolis Commercial, was asked. SCANTY ATTIRE’BLAMED Evangelist Says Modem Dress Leads to Lax Morals. Scanty feminine attire was blamed for lax morals by the Rev. J. W. McFarland, evangelist at Wheeler City Mission, 241-43 N. Delaware St., Monday night. COUNCIL VOTES MONEY Police and Fire Departments and Dog Pound Aided. Tangled finances of the board of safety were adjusted when city council Monday night voted additional appropriations for the police and fire departments and dog pound. The parts and repairs department in the police auto fund was augmented $1,500 and a similar amount was voted for coal for the fire department. The dog pound fund was increased $41)5. ORDINANCES CODIFIED City Commission Reports Virtual Completion of Task. Following research of one year, members of the commission to codify city ordinances passed since 1917 reported virtual completion of the task to city council Monday night. Members are Samuel Ashby, William A. Pickens and Owen S. Doling. They were aided by James M. Ogden, corporation counsel. CITY MARKET EGGS HIGHER . > Sell at 70 Cents a Dozen on Most Stands. Egg prices went slightly higher today on the city market. Most of the stands priced them at 70 cents a dozen although a few sold eggs at 65 cents a dozen. Cauliflower, selling at 35 and 40 cents a head, was higher. Tokay grapes continued to be seen In abundance at 3 pounds for 25 cents. Potatoes sold from 4 to 7 pounds for 25 cents. Other prices included: California seedless grapes 20 cents a pound; sweet potatoes 5 pounds for 25 cents; green beans and wax beans 20 cents a pound; new Florida coooanuts 10 cents each; California navel oranges 60 cents a dozen and bananas 15 and 25 cents a dozen. Satsumas oranges were plentiful at 40 to 60 cents a dozen: grapefruit 10 cents and 2 for 25 cents; head lettuce 15 cents each; butter 60 caflts a pound; persimmons 25 cents a box, and mushrooms 90 cents a pound.
