LARGE PLANT TAKES PLACE OF OLD WJZ New Powerful Station to Be Located in East. Bu Timet Special NEW YORK, Nov. 13.—What is to be one of the largest and most powerful radio broadcasting stations in the East is now nearing completion at Bound Brook, N. J. This is to be the new station of the Radio Corporation of America, and it will take the place of WJZ on the air. It is said the power will be 60,000 watts. Located in the heart of New Jersey, away from the metropolis, it is hoped by the builders that it will be a benefit to radio listeners of the country and will mark another step in the progress of radio broadcasting. Promotes Art It will he remembered by radio fans who have been interested in radio for any length of time that four years ago WJZ was one of the few broadcasting stations in the 'East, and this station did much toward promoting the radio art to its present degree. The original station was opened in Newark, N. J., a little more than four years ago. At that time the general public held little interest in this seemingly new science called ‘‘radio.’’ However, news spread rapidly of !the entertainment that was being sent through the ether and it was •not long before many persons were building radio receivers and erecting antennae. WJZ remained in operation for a little more than a year and a half. It was then planned to move the station to New York City, where it would have a better opportunity to obtain talent of a higher class. Asa result the twin present stations at Abolian Hall, New York City, were set in operation. Two Stations Built To improve the facilities of the station two separate broadcasting stations were built, each having its own power plant, antenna system, transmitter and studio. Thus WJY was initiated to the ether. These two stations have been supplying entertainment to radio fans in the vicinity of New York City for the last year ,or more. However, according to reports, very few listeners outside the radius of 100 miles from the city have been able to hear the station consistently. Probably it was due to this reason that the new superpower station at Bound Brook was planned. CHURCH CLUB TO MEET Henry M. Dowling, attorney, and Scout Executive F. O. Belzer will address the Men’s Club of the Fairview Presbyterian Church, FortySixth St .and Kenwood Ave., at a dinner and meeting at the church tonight. Dowling will speak on Optimism.” Members of the recently organized Boy Scout Jroop will be guests.

Noted Lawyer Quits Broadcasting Sti NEA Service i CHICAGO. Nov. 13.—Charles E. Erbstein, famous Chicago lawyer and radio enthusiast, henceforth will have nothing more to do with broadcasting. He said so Just before he was to close a deal with liberty Magazine Interests for the sale of his stations, WTAS and DCEE, at Elgin, 111. The call letters chosen for the stations under new management are WLIB. "The reason that I’m trying to close such a deal," Erbstein said Just before its actual completion, ‘‘is that I can't practice law and be a big radio man at the same time. I can’t do two things at once.”
FOR THE NOTEBOOK An unbalanced set will howl. When constructing a counterpoise, place it directiy under the aerial and as nearly parallel to it as possible. Wire fences act as very efficient substitutes for grounds, especially in dry countries, when no good ground is available. One of the most valuable accessories to a tube set is a switch by means of which the batteries may be readily connected or disconnected. Dial settings will change with the ■weather. This occurs because the capacities of the coils and condensers change with the humidity and temperature. When trouble-hunting in a set, the parts marked X in the wiring diagram are the points to look for defects.

HOOVER PLANS TO RECLASSIFY BROADCASTERS Regulation of Stations to Depend Only on Power. Bn Times Special WASHINGTON, Nov. 13.—Elimination of the present classification of stations is anticipated at the confer-, ence called, by Secretary Herbert C. Hoover to meet In Washington, beginning Nov. 9. It is believed that stations will no longer be designated by letters as at present., such as Classes A, B, C and D, and that for purposes of regulation the classification of stations will depend upon their power. If this idea is adopted the allotment of wave bands for the different classes of stations will be discontinused. The entire broadcast band will be open to any type of station whenever there is a vacancy. The purpose of the change is that it will enable more stations to be

crowded In and, it is believed, will tend to Increase the service generally for the public. For instance, if a station of 500 watts operates on say 360 meters in Boston, it will be possible also to place a 100-watt station on the same wavelength out in the Middle West without interference resulting. Under this scheme the powerful broadcasting stations can be scattered throughout the entire broadcast band, with the smaller stations sandwiched in. Such an arrangement would make available more channels for powerful stations without increasing facilities for smaller stations.

without unduly preventing reception of other stations near the transmitter. "Most of the letters received from fans who heard the station on both 2,500 and 50,000 watts, report that the higher power was more than twice as loud as the ordinary power. Some even put the proportion at ten to one. "Thirty per cent of the reports see no choice between the two powers in quality, and the rest are fairly even split in favor of one or the other transmission in this respect. "Fading is shown to have had much less effect on the high power. Reports on the sharpness of tuning are practically unanimous that it was Just as easy to tune out the high power as the lower. “Only very few of the letters complained of any blanketing effect due to the higher power."
