Rldff., at 536 W. Thirtieth St., adult blind are taught to create beautiful and useful products, and a market for these products is provided. Aided by Ralston Prior to 1915 there was no provision by the State for aiding the adult blind. The late Senator Samuel M. Ralston, in that year, sponsored the legislative act which set aside the first sum of money for this purpose. Now, about fifty sightless persons In the school and over a. hundred in the State and in communication with the school, are happily bilsy. C. D. Chadwick, executive secretary of the school and of the work that goes out from it, himself blind, has been in charge from the first. Ten persons beside himself are now employed, either at the school or out in the State, In various teaching or selling capacities. Trades Taught Adult blind, in their homes, are taught to sew, weave, crochet and typewrite—even to read and write, if they Wish. The teachers, who instruct at the school and in the homes of the blind, are the Misses Mary E. Cain, Aletha Young and Pearl MeGibbons, and through, their efforts many heretofore idle, helpless hßnds are now turning out work that pays well. In the school there are a broom, making shop, sewing room, chair caneing and rug weaving departments. The hum of machinery, the general air of life and activity everywhere, make the visitor forget that the workers are blind. At the sewing machines one has to look into the faces of the women to realize that the hems are turned on aprons, the seams guided down dress lengths, only by the feel of sensitive fingers. KITCHEN SHOULD BE PLANNED

By Molly Elliott Whether she intends to work in it herself pr not, the modern woman takes delight in planning her kitchen in the new home. And the wise husband will let her carry out her wise fancies in this direction, for most of the horror of kitchen work is due to the lack of attention given this room before building starts. Long before the first pencil line is made in the architect's arrangement of the billiard room and the radio room and the "den,” a clever woman will corner him and deftly persuade him to use discretion in the position of her kitchen in reference to the rear entrance, refrigerator, dining-room and cellar. She may avoid hundreds of steps if he will be talked to on this point. Next, she should advise with an expert as to the quality of the water supply available and the assured permanency of the wrought iron or brass pipes throughout. Says one writer: “A house without adequate supply of running hot water is not a house, but a tent.” Moreover, regard as to the possibility of a supply of water, either natural or softened by an automatic softener, is a necessary feature. Faucets Important After these little background features have been settled, the rest of the drop is more or less simple and the stage is ready for the perfect setting. The sink, carefully placed as to the size of the room and the position of the windows, must be high enough to prevent backaches. From there on in it seems that every little thing in the planning of the kitchen is equally important. First it would seem that the lighting and electric plugs for appliances would deserve attention. A nearly perfect kitchen in this respect had two ordinary wall sockets, two highpower wall sockets, and two wall lights with frosted globes, and a center indirect light in the ceiling. One of the wall lights was directly over the sink to chase away the glooms of dish washing after dinner. Need Closet Room Plenty of closet room, dish cupboard, broom cupboard and storage closets, are actually essential in every kitchen and are truly receiving more attention from the average architect these days. These must, of course, be thought of before she house is planned or they can not be included. One closet, or, ns our mothers taught us to say, “pantry” is not enough, for it does seem bad business to have pot and pans and dust mops and vacuum cleaners, all in the same small enclosure. The floor covering is an essential consideration, but may well come after the house is built. However, the floor itself must be laid with care and the material used not to be an after thought but a real part of the finished product. Care in the choice of ranges will eliminate the need for flues and outlets, otherwise there should' be allowance made for these in the original plan. The tables must be high, at least thirty-six inches, and for a person of a little above average height thirtyeight Inches is not too much. Nearly every table bought at random is actually too low for the health and comfort of the average woman. Above each service table and at the side of the stove a proetcf.td rack for utensils, spoons and forks and dippers. add much to the convenience. The walls may be made restful and pleasing by the use of cheerful and clean colors. A dainty kitchen was of white and yellow with yellow and white checked gingham Dutch casement curtains aim soft tan and yellow linoleum on the floors. The well-planned kitchen Is finished with an Incinerator, refrigerating system and outdoor connected openings for the refuse containers. Rooms like these will not only help the woman, who does her own housework, but will mean much in keeping an efficient maid.
