Scenes In Copenhagen, capital of Denmark.
S PEACEFUL, smiling landscape of gently rolling farmland, low hills and dense forests of venerable beeches, wooded shores, and shallow lagoons, and always a view of the crisp, blue waters of sea or lake stream or fiord, dottde with innumerable little whitesailed boats—these are some of the pictures that linger long in memory, after a visit to the little Scandinavian kingdom of Denmark. And as the dream pictures come back, we recall the neat little villages with their single, long, cobbled street and their church, and the pretty little farms with low, white-plastered buildings, topped by red-tiled or heavily-thatched roofs, and likely as not a large stork’s nest ir the chimney, for the stork Is very much at, home here and seems to be Denmark’s own bird. These farm buildings are very substantial—almost never do you see a frame building of any sort in Denmark; and they are always built in the form of a square surrounding an inner courtyard. In front is the carefully fenced garden, filled with a profusion of flowers, berry bushes and fruit trees, and always a pretty little summer house, where the family enjoy their meals during the summer months, for the Danes love the out-of-doors and make the most of the short, hot. summer. Adjoining farm lands are rarely separated by fences, since it has been found to he more economical in many ways to do away with these. The cattle are not permitted to roam in the pasture, but are very carefully fathered. More often they are kept in their well ventilated stalls the year round and the freshly cut clover is brought to them there, for the Danes have found that cows give more and richer milk when they are not bothered by the files and the hot sun of the fields. Denmark proper occupies the peninsula of Jutland (about the size of Vermont) and the adjacent Islands, the largest of which are Funen and Zealand, lying between Germany on the south and Sweden to the north and east. To the west is the North ENGLAND PLANS MOST POWERFUL RADIO STATION Goliath of Them All to Have Output of 800,000 Watts, Report. Bit .YEA Hrrxice WASHINGTON, Nov. 12.—'The Goliath of all radio stations—more than fourteen times as powerful as any broadcasting station in the United States—is being erected at Rugby, England. It will have an output of 800,000 watts, which assumes tremendous proportions when compared with the maximum amount of electric energy used by any broadcasting station in this country—so,ooo watts by WGY of Schenectady, N. Y. This 800-kilowatt, long wave station will probably begin testing early next year. It will be used for communication with the British colonies and for other long-distance work. Electron tul>es —probably eighty ten-kilowatt, units in parallel—will be employed, since both arc and spark transmitters are being discredited in foreign countries as well as In the United States. Historically It is Interesting to note that not long ago the two most powerful radio stations in the world were those located at Bordeaux, France, and Annapolis, Md., with 1,000 and 500 kilowatts, respectively. These, however, make use of aro transmitters and the output of power probably represents only from 100 to 200 kilowatts. Now, with the advent of tube transmitters, the age of great power has arrived. The United States Navy Department ts now installing an 80,000watt tube transmitter at* the San Diego naval radio station, the powerful tube sending set in this country. The equipment represents less than ten times the amount of power employed at the Rugby, England, station—the most powerful radio station in the world. What a contrast between this huge amount of power and the five, ten and even fifty watts used by radio amateurs, and yet the latter have been able to span great dis lances.
