One of tile big American guns that stopped firing on Armistice !)<■.
NK minute before 11 o’clock in the morning of November u___ 11, 1918 the long Ixittle front still shook with the deafening roar of great cannon, the hum of countless rifle bullets, and the rattling put-put-put of thousands of machine guns. One minute after that hour the Rtillness almost of death brooded over the scene, and there could be heard the faint happy song of little birds. The armistice wtih Germany, which had been signed early that morning, had gone into effect-. The armistice which were concluded between the victorious Allies on the one side and defeated Bulgaria (Sept, 29), Turkey (Oct, 31), Austria-Hungary (Nov. 3), and Germany (Nov. 11, 1918) were of a different sort. They contained such severe terms that, instead of maintaining the existing military situation (status quo), they were deliberately framed so as to make it iimpossible for the Central Powers to resume the war. They amounted, therefore, to surrender on the part of Germany and her allies and to forecast the peace terms to be imposed on the defeated states, Biggest War Not only in numbers of people involved, but in other ways, the great World War makes all previous conflicts pale into insignificance when compared to it. The size of the armies and navies raised on each side would have astonished the conquerors of old. The amount of money spent seems fabulous. 'lt has been estimated that the direct cost of thjß war was about $200,000,000,000, a sum which If coined Into silver dollars and piled up along the western battle front would make a wall 475 miles long, 2 feet thick, and 6 feet 8 Inches high. The United State alone spent as much money as it did on all the expenses of the government from 1791 to 1914. The number of men who were killed oY wounded amounted to about 30,000.000. The guns and supplies necessary to support the vast military hosts called for the most efficient organization the world had ever seen—an organization which Included not only soldiers in uniform, but unnumbered men, women and children, who labored to supply the countless needs of the enormous armies. llow It Started Francis Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was

murdered, June 28, 1914, at Pera-jevo (Bosnia) by a young Slav, one of the millions living in Austria-Hungary who for years had longed to throw off the yoke and join with their kinsmen in the Serbian kingdom to the south. Austria accused the Serbian government of having encouraged the crime, and presented an ultimatum to Serbia making very humaliating demands upon that little country-. The Serbians yielded to all the demands of the arrogant Austrian government except two, which would have dishononed them as a nation. They suggested that these two he referred to the Hague Tribunal or to the great powers for arbitration. Immediately (July 28, 1924) the Austrians declared war on Serbia. Serbia appealed to Russia, which came to the assistance of the little country-. Germany, whose government had blocked the attempt of British statesmen to find a peaceful settlement, then entered on the side of Austria-Hungary, and France Immediately took up the gauntlet by the side of her ably, Russia. Germany Makes Demands On Aug. 2, 1914, Germany, In order to strike France from behind, demanded of Belgium the right to march through her territory into France. National self-interest as well as her plighted word led Great Britain to Join France and Russia when Belgium was invaded. BethmannHollweg, the German chancellor, declared Great Britain went to war “just for a scrap of paper.” With Great Britain, however, the solemn treaty guaranteeing the neutrality of Belgium wag no “scrap of paper,” Japan entered the war three weeks later In fulfillment of treaty obligations to Great Britain. The United States entered the conflict on the side of the allies in 1917. The murder o$ the Austrian archduke was this the spark which set the world on fire.
