These pictures show the three chief operations in making cotton cloth. The cotton is first .fed into machines that loosen the filler (1). The cotton is then formed into a fluffy ribbon and coiled into cans (2). In the lower picture you see the cotton after it is spun into threads being wound for the loom.
SHE soft, fleecy fiber that makes cotton one of the most useful of plants is the fluffy coat that Mother Nature has put around cotton seeds. Each cotton plant is a dainty little bush about four feet tall. The cotton blossom Is first white and then its shell changes to pink. At last it turns red and the petals fall, leaving a capsule like a hazel nut filled with little seeds. These capsules are called cotton bolls. For six or eight weeks the cotton bolls swell until they are as big as eggs. The husk turns brown and cracks along five seams. Then it bursts wide and out pops a fluffy snowball. The picking season lasts from July to Thanksgiving and the field must be picked over and over because the cotton does not all ripen at once. The balls of fluffy white cotton are full of seeds. Up to the eighteenth century all the cotton seeds had to be pulled from the lint by hand.

That made cotton cost a great deal, even when the picking was done by slaves. Then Eli Whitney, an American, invented she cotton gin, a machine with rows and rows of steel fingers to pick the lint from the seeds. The seeds used to be thrown away or burned, but it was discovered that these seeds are as full of oil as a nut, and that this oil has a pleasant taste. So now the oil is squeezed out and used for salad oil on the table and for cooking and making oleomargarine. The crushed seeds are used to feed cattle. After the seeds are removed the cotton is baled. In the mills the bales are opened and the crowded lint is loosened, beaten to a swan’s down fluff again and fanned free of dust. The tiny fillers are combed and made to lie all one way. They are then formed into ropes and these ropes pulled and twisted into tiny threads. From these threads cotton cloth is woven.
